Hail and Farewell

Post by Upton_O_Goode » Tue Mar 12, 2019 10:56 am

To each one of the people posting on this board: Ave atque vale! This will be my final post.

I’ve been posting here for two years, and whatever ideas of value there may have been in my mind when I started, they have all been laid out here for everyone to see. I don’t think I can contribute any fundamentally new ideas beyond what I have already posted, and, in any case, getting people to change their minds is like taking a bone away from a bulldog.

In my view, the barbarians are at the gate in America right now, and the values of tolerance, scientific inquiry, and compassion for the downtrodden are being flung down and danced upon in the current surfeit of TRUMPery that pervades too much of our life.

I’m looking for a more effective way to keep the flame of civilization alive and thinking of joining the Vermont Humanities Council or the Holocaust Studies group at the University of Vermont. I might even become a volunteer for the Democratic Party in Burlington. I haven’t decided yet.
I’m writing this note to say thanks to all of you, those who amused me, those who kept me informed, and those who confronted me when my facts and reasoning were wrong. I’ve learned a lot from all of you.

I am now very busy working on an encyclopedia article that I foolishly agreed to write, and so already spending too much time looking at a computer screen. My daily reading, which always involves a chapter or so of reading in Russian, French, and German, and a review of some aspect of ancient Greek that I need to polish up, along with at least two chapters of some history text, takes away several hours a day, so that by the time I get an hour or two of outdoor exercise, the day is pretty much gone. Something has to go.

As my final gesture, I’m taking off my mask and revealing my actual identity to anyone who wasn’t curious enough to “out” me from all the clues I left in my posts. If you want to know, here’s my webpage at the University of Vermont:

www.cems.uvm.edu/~rlcooke/

So, best of luck to all of you. Continue the good fight against prejudice and irrationality. If I come back to the board, it will be under a new handle. Upton O. Goode now belongs to the ages.
“It is certainly sad and regrettable that so many innocent people died…Stalin was absolutely adamant on making doubly sure: spare no one…I don’t deny that I supported that view. I was simply not able to study every individual case…It was hard to draw a precise line where to stop.”

I'm envious you find yourself so busy and better involved elsewhere. Your breath was always fresh. I encourage you if the fancy ever does pass you again.....drop in with a new moniker, or your current good(e) name, and comment as you might.

Ohhhh! It's a shame you're going, UoG. I've enjoyed your posts and level-headedness.

“Nothing. They are hopelessly lost.”

I always enjoyed your posts Upton. Goodbye.
"We are still waiting for anyone to rebut the main theme of the article that the decode in question and the numbers it quoted perfectly match those in the Korherr report.

Until such a rebuttal comes to light and goes through peer review the article stands the test of time. And after 10 years since the article was published both Peter (Witte) and I have moved on to other research projects. "

Upton, you leave because there's nothing left to say? May I present some scenarios where that's not true, because they haven't happened yet.

1. gorgeous says something that makes sense.

2. Gord posts sober.

3. I post when I'm not on oxycodone.

See?

Fare-thee-well, oh you Barbary merchants
Fare-thee-well to the Spanish blockade
Fare-thee-well to the straits of Gibraltar
and the treacherous seas of Cathay

...

Take me back, oh you Barbary merchants
let me risk the Spanish blockade
carry me to the straits of Gibraltar
and the treacherous seas of Cathay

Dafuq? Spain, Gibraltar, Barbary pirates, all in or around the Med.

Then "Cathay", or "China" as we know it now.

Is there some type of requirement that we post sober? If so I’m screwed.
