A burst of light from far away may have been an odd type of exploding star or a white dwarf being eaten by a black hole.

The English are such very wordsmiths.

Anyhow, it's called "The Cow" because it was given a random name which ended in the letters c-o-w. It doesn't look like a cow in any other way. But man, what a great name!

It's still being pondered what The Cow was. Perhaps a black hole swallowed a neutron star. Or perhaps there's a hitherto unknown form of supernova. Either of those would be never-before-seen things to astronomers.
