Generosity ?

Post by Lance Kennedy » Fri Jan 11, 2019 10:12 pm

Reference, New Scientist, 5 January 2019, page 15.

Researchers found that wealthy people can be induced to donate more to a charity by appealing to their need for power, than by referring to how much good they are doing.

Helps to explain the behavior of wealthy arseholes !

Utility companies can get people to send more money by threatening to shut off their power.

You can get more money out of my pockets when I'm asleep than when I'm awake.

Is this weird re pan handlers or set-ups for chairty?: if asked, I say no thank you. If not asked.......sometimes.

Who are these people......and are they "deserving." I am too covetous of my own $$ I suppose.....................but/Contra.............I think this is what taxes supporting a safety net is all about. You "deserve" when you meet the minimal standards which should be "basic" for everyone. Quite willing to pay my share....even at marginal rates. This is what being a social liberal/fiscal conservative is all about: lots of social supports: but pay for them.

Bobbo

I agree about taxes and safety nets, if this is done correctly, and it usually is not.

However the truly deserving charities are for nations other than wealthy western ones, where poverty, disease, and hunger are serious. I rarely, if ever, give money to local NZ charities. But I give often to help those in genuine dire poverty in the poorest nations. Of course, you need to be careful about which charity to give to, since there are some that are wasteful or even crooked. But there are reputable lists of worthy charities to refer to.

That one, TJ, is too USA centric.
A good charity is one where a few dollars changes a person's life for the better. That can be done in very poor nations, but not inside the USA.

www.givewell.org is the kind of thing I meant, referring to global charities.

I remember two advertisements I saw.

1. Guide dogs for the blind. "It costs $22,000 to train a guide dog for a blind person, so give generously."
2. Fred Hollows Foundation. "It costs $25 to perform an operation to restore sight to a person with cataract blindness."

Guess which one I donated to ?
