Norsemen - Norwegian comedy

Post by landrew » Fri Aug 10, 2018 3:52 pm

I watched a few episodes on Netflix. I just had to stop. Norwegians are a great people, and I have some good Norwegian friends, but maybe comedy is not their strong suit. Norway is kiddingly referred to as one of the most boring places on earth, after all, the national pastime was walking.

The job of a skeptic is to investigate the unexplained; not to explain the uninvestigated.

I happen to know that Norwegians have an uproarious sense of humour. It's just that no one else understands it.

Don't know if that would be called a "dry" sense of humor, but found it very amusing.

Hmmm. The problem with it is that as soon as the first arrow drops short, then the entire sketch becomes obvious. The only mildly amusing bit is that they keep going when the joke is done and dusted. I went to college with a boatload of Nogs, so I know that this isn't typical.

The gag ratio is very low. They drag them out for much longer than they are funny, and some of them are not really funny at all.

Kinda like SNL - at times. Many times.

The joke is about how the people are behaving, not the bit about the arrows or the chief sucking at archery. The dragging out is part of the joke.

But they're just standing there occasionally shaking their heads. Admit it - you have Norwegian ancestry, don't you?

I think we need to blame the Zucker brothers for Flying High aka Airplane where they shoved 10 jokes a minute into movies. They set an impossible pace for humour.

I also think that we all got used to "Get Smart" where there were running gags, that appeared in every episode and that format allowed for 10 jokes a minute, because the jokes didn't need setting up.

On the other hand, that main character does look a lot like Gord's bastard child with Matt Damon.
:D

Could be that lots of people can't tell if it's amusing or not due to the lack of a laugh track.

I watched another 10 minutes or so, and it was about all I could take.
The sophomoric and gory humor just doesn't work like it does with Monty Python. It's more disgusting than funny.
It seems like they're grasping at straws, stooping to any low humor as they go along.

I looked up "Gord Damon" online to post an appropriate picture and apparently no one has ever been named that.
