Beware, fake witches, beware!
http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/psychic-hi ... -1.3347483
"Undertakes, for a consideration, to tell fortunes"? Aren't all financial advisers witches according to that definition?
Yes indeed, it is in fact a crime to pretend to practice witchcraft in Canada: http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/acts ... n-365.htmlPolice in Toronto say a psychic has been charged with pretending to practise witchcraft after a customer allegedly paid more than $100,000 to have an "evil spirit" removed.
Every one who fraudulently
(a) pretends to exercise or to use any kind of witchcraft, sorcery, enchantment or conjuration,
(b) undertakes, for a consideration, to tell fortunes, or
(c) pretends from his skill in or knowledge of an occult or crafty science to discover where or in what manner anything that is supposed to have been stolen or lost may be found,
is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

I think all priests, rabbis, ministers, imans, etc. should qualify as witch doctors.

On second thought, perhaps I misspoke.
I wonder how much money I could make if I started my own religion...like L. Ron Hubbard.
I could become the Ascended Master of the Cosmic Heavens or some such. I could even peddle my own holy water!

Re: Beware, fake witches, beware!
I'm fascinated. How is it possible to PROVE that someone is pretending to practise witchcraft?
(Careful what you say. The entire Roman Catholic world is holding its breath).

illegal religious practices, tempting to almost want to stand up for. but can you imagine? the claiming of others' accident, coincidence image voice and narrative and dilemma to essentially say they were doing things they were never doing, saying things they were never saying and trying to procure power from others by tricking them into believing an illusion that is dangerous. imagine, the power of collective belief and the power of hypnosis in collective understanding: placebo in the madness of crowds and popular dilutions (Mackay). convince enough people of anything, it can carry for centuries. Dum de dum de dum...oh! Hi there! I didn't see you come in!
Well, since you're here anyway, why don't I tell you about this: https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2018/10/2 ... n=trending
On the other hand, duelling will be legal again. That should make for more interesting political campaigns.

If you ask me, D&D larpers should be held accountable for their actions....Dorie "Madeena" Stevenson was arrested Thursday after a five-month investigation, according to police. Officers also recovered evidence from her property after executing a search warrant.
One of Stevenson's alleged victims told police they had been defrauded of more than $60,000 after consulting with the woman, who owns the registered business Milton Psychic....
...Stevenson was charged with "Witchcraft — Fortune Telling," police said. Section 365 of Canada's Criminal Code defines witchcraft in the context of fraud as:
...Police, however, may not be able to charge people with "witchcraft" for much longer. Proposed legislation in the form of Bill C-51 plans to remove witchcraft, duelling and other "obsolete" offences from the Criminal Code."Every one who pretends to exercise or to use any kind of witchcraft, sorcery, enchantment or conjuration; undertakes, for a consideration, to tell fortunes; or pretends from his skill in or knowledge of an occult or crafty science to discover where or in what manner anything that is supposed to have been stolen or lost may be found."
"One must wonder about the existing laws regarding the practice of witchcraft, sorcery, enchantment, or conjuration," NDP MP Wayne Stetski Kootenay told Parliament in 2017.
"In addition to the fact that it impinges on the rights of some religions, and would confuse the U.S. president, who is certain that he is the target of a witch hunt, this might also hurt Harry Potter cosplayers; Dungeons and Dragons "larpers," which I do not know much about but which my staff assure me is a thing; and others for whom sorcery is an entertainment. This is a good law to be rid of."...

Of course it should be illegal, We can't have spurious religions parading around everywhere.
The job of a skeptic is to investigate the unexplained; not to explain the uninvestigated.
