this piece hits on some important aspects of Cobain and Nirvana's appeal: Yes, Kurt Cobain was a grunge icon. He was also a gay rights hero.; when I saw Nirvana in '93 they halted the show to stop men in the audience from badgering and groping women . . . something Joe Biden is learning not do do just now . . .

Fritz Hollings, Democrat from SC of Gramm-Rudman-Hollings fame. Budget hawk, quick witted and a bit nasty. He ran for president in 1984. Asked what would be his first act as president, Hollings said, “Shoot all the pollsters, and hire a single historian.” He explained his campaign like this: “I will never forget politicking for president. I went to Worcester, Massachusetts. I knocked on the door, and the lady said, ‘Who are you?’ I said, ‘Fritz Hollings.’ She thought it was a German trucking company.” IIRC Hollings was kind of racist and a good old Cold Warrior.

Already?
Reminds me of the good old days...but then Nirvana was THE band i could not stand, and its main singer even less. I hated his haircut, his personality, his wife, his songs and most of all his bloody voice. I admit that very few shared my view back then. I remember than for a few weeks life became hell with all the tributes and replay on radio until finally the world became "Cobain's voice free"...

Weren't my cup of tea per se, but listenable.... I thought they got far too much credit for the "grunge" stuff which I thought had been more or less found expression years before by, eg, Neil Young mit Crazy Horse....

Well that sucks. It was when the offensive line was made up of Jim Ringo, Fuzzy Thurston and Jerry Kramer, Forrest Gregg and Bob Skoronski, with Carroll Dale as the tight end, that I actually like football. Speaking of which, I saw a behemoth of a gentleman pass by me in downtown Chicago earlier this week in a jersey that read Nitschke on the back

Those Packer teams were amazing. I watched some NFL Films specials on them, they were like a machine.

As a kid growing up in central PA I shouldn't have been a Packers' fan. I was. My father was a Giants' fan - his whole life, which was also weird as he grew up in PA. We loved to get on each other about the Packers-Giants rivalry . . . I definitely got the best of that one. :)

I bet my driver's ed teacher $25 that the Packers would win Super Bowl I. He refused to pay. LOL

Yeah, I’m surprised your father didn’t disown you...

Sounds like you DE teacher was a sore loser.
:D

My family were/are Steelers/Eagles fans. It made for interesting family reunions. Because we lived in Houston I grew up on Oilers fan but later when they moved I disowned them. Now I don’t have a favorite NFL team, any team playing the Cowboys is my favorite team that week.

My brother and I are planning to attend a game next Fall. We went to a Kansas City Chiefs game in 2013 and it was a lot of fun.

One of the first movies I ever saw was Star Wars. I saw it in 1977 when I was seven. I went with my mother, older sister and older brother. I remember sitting in a dark theater with a big box of popcorn, wide-eyed and captivated. It’s a cherished memory.
RIP, Peter Mayhew.
