OK - so a meteorite is the only thing against which we need to build fantastical science-fictionish defences. You've saved the Earth a lot of money there, Gord. You can be very proud.

Uhhhh.... A meteorite is just a rock lying on the ground. It's not gonna hurt very many people, unless you starting chucking it at their heads.

My wedding ring has a band of meteorite inlaid into a tungsten carbide band.

Was it that way when you found it?

Nice dictionary exercise. Since they are slicing the baloney in such thin slices.........is the definition given of meteorite "exactly" correct as in what do you call a fragment of a meteoroid or an asteroid that hits the ocean and not the GROUND?...........or a lake?? .... and then the lake dries up or still has water in it?...........dare I mention Ice Flows??

Ground: 1. The solid part of the earth's surface

but:

2. The loose soft material that makes up a large part of the land surface

I mean, its just so confusing and the chart doesn't even include "someone who gains fame, fortune, or other success in a realtively short time.

Since this thread is already gone cattywampus, I'll just say that words are tools, and dictionaries are reference tools. There are no universal, infallible meanings. As an analogy: Nuts and bolts have standardized threads, which benefits everyone, but any machinist can make customized nuts and bolts to suit their own purposes. Similarly, it's a living language, and words can have divergent meanings, where they are needed. Holding up a dictionary like a holy bible and declaring it to be the final authority is silly. A wordsmith crafts the language to extend the meanings of writing beyond dictionary definitions.

landrew: you sure do love to dote on the already obvious with a heavy mix of irrelevancy.

Prove me wrong: how has this thread gone cattywampus?

It's usually given away by the high Gord content.

A meteorite - from a few grams to several dozens of tonnes... size doesn't matter. Now where have I heard that before? Sooo if a large asteroid hits the earth - say a kilometre in diameter, does it suddenly become a meteorite?

I can buy a REAL rabbit for $5...and if I choose wisely, have all the rabbits I want.

ummmmm.............btw.........I have chosen wisely, and have NO rabbits. Having been bitten by rats, chinchillas, various birds, and my lizard, ALL OF WHICH I treated with great care and comfort..............those teeth just really put me off.
