OK, so it is that time of year once again that I will be bombarded with Xian cards, all expressing a theistic message of some sort. I too wish to connect with people and while not wanting to join in the mass hallucination, do want to wish them all well. So fellow skeptics here – please help me out with some of your suggestions for `good feeling` wishes which can be added to the card, without causing too much offense.

I have these as a start…. May your….

Telomerase remain long,
Politicians be honest and operating in the present,
Scientists not be perverted by big business,
Mind be skeptical,
Climate be mild,
Guns be out of sight,
Drugs be legal,
Taxes reduce the debt,

Personally?
I picked December 31st as MY holiday, the best day of the year for offering greetings: the present is about to become the past, " tomorrow shines, a gleaming eye and a welcoming smile."
Perhaps next year we will all discover that humankind is not the pack of shits as described here by the Guiding Lights of Misanthropy….and that while picking up a guy who needs a ride on a cold day may be dangerous it isn't ALWAYS fatal… 9 times out of 10 he will thank you profusely and go on his way….
Taking a chance is what makes life worth living and our species worth saving, so cheers to that.
And keep in mind: great music didn't end with Mozart… the greatest composer hasn't been born yet.
Ditto the greatest artist, writer, or lover….."the best is yet to be.."

Thank you Oleg for your insight, humor and affectionate response to what was clearly a quick judgement… unwarranted but understandable.
The one thing I don't want to do is give Eggs a bad day.
It would adversely affect any potential chickens for one thing..

I dunno. I'd just go with all the schmaltz. I don't much care for mindless conformity, but eeehhhh... 'Tis the season...

The only time of year (absent weddings or funerals) that I'll set foot in a religious building. I try to mix it up by going to the three "main ones" that have a link to the pagan inspired holiday. Obviously a Christian place (A church or cathedral), but also both a Jewish and a Muslim place (temple and mosque, respectively).

I don't see that participation, however uninvolved mine may be, as being a problem. They know that I'm an Atheist by now. But I'm still warmly welcomed and never subject to being preached at.

I guess I just "enjoy the show" :lol:

I have never been inside a place of so-called worship other than as a tourist in the course of an entire lifetime.

( I DO love medieval cathedrals and there are many in Europe, from Portugal to Moscow that knock me out, and paradoxically I'm glad they are there despite their clear connection with the worst of human behaviors..
But to have missed the Cologne's cathedral, or that of Chartres in the moonlight would have been a terrible personal loss.)

And as an adult with children it was a family decision to not celebrate any religious holidays (and barely national ones… Thanksgiving gives me hives) and to just ignore tham…
And so it was…and so it has been.
BUT… while I don't and never have celebrated the Passover (there are too many political and aesthetic reasons not to) I do love these two seemingly antithetical poems (but not really) by the very secular Israeli poet Aharon Shabtai, and offer it to the poster who was looking for a response to the season, any season…the answer to most emotional dilemmas is, somehow, somewhere, in poetry.

The first is the passionately angry response to the cruel and misguided leadership of the Stae of Israel and the religious justification for it:

All religions are created out of the same cloth… and equal.
When you start to identify one as worse (or better) than another, you are giving credence, in no small way, to the suggestion that religion is something other (or at least has the potential to be something other) than a vehicle for xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, moral superiority and ultimately slaughter for which violent, mindless, misanthropy ("humanity is a mass of shits!!") is required.

Well.... Perhaps the traditional Norwegian way could offer some choices.

Season greeting is God Jul. Difficult to translate, but the reference is Yule as time of the year, with Jòlnir
( one of Odin`s many names ) as context. Symbolic references to Aka-Tor ( Sledding-Thor ), seems for unknown reasons to be plentiful as well.

The Gulating Law written about thousand years ago, states that the different rulers/chiefs of the land, should all brew their best "Juleøl" to honor "Kvitekrist" ( WhiteChrist ). Since people kept many of the old ways alive even after Christianity arrived, you simply had to mix things up to find your own way.

So to this present day, this is one of the most expected and embraced elements of "Christmas".

A bit rougher, tastier and potent brew especially made for the season. And, well... It is tradition to drink quantities some would view as a bit over the top. One must be sure not to disrespect traditions and the old law. If you like you can safely chug one for Jesus. ;) Skål!

One of my favorite breweries is Dragonmead in Warren, Michigan. In particular, their Jul Øl is fantastic.
