It has to be entertainment. Also, I suspect that trolls typically hate the trolled.

I remember posting some stuff on an Objectivist forum. I read some of their stuff on their forum, and I asked some questions about things that I thought they didn't consider. I was accused of being a troll. Being accused of being a troll actually made me want to troll them, since I don't like Objectivists. (I ultimately didn't troll the site at all.)

I'd say that most of them are short term trolls. They are new to forums. They make a couple of newbie errors ( as I did) and got shredded (as I was). They then get some short term payback trolling other forums until they get bored or want to earn respect through normal conversation.

I think the next group would be a particular personality type. There have always been "grumps" writing letters to the editor of newspapers or getting into arguments at pub trivia nights. They aren't "nutty". It's just the way they are. "To the Editor. Sir, imagine my surprise on opening your newspaper, to see that........"

We get some Christians here who "sort of troll". However I think that because they can't form reasonable succinct arguments they start wafting and this looks like trolling. They don't seem to last more than three months.

And then we get the interesting loonies.

"David" the holocaust denier has been posting the same insane 70's propaganda for more than 15 years, 9 of those on this forum. No one reads what he posts other than a couple of people. I would guess that his own real life is so insignificant that he seeks the accolades of other holocaust deniers for "holding up the flag" even though the cult is dead and the few remaining holocaust deniers hate him. He has picked a hated cult because it gives him an immediate enemy to fight against.

Highflyertoo, who thought he was "Emmanuel the rescuing angel" was simply nuts and got a bit better. He evolved into thinking he will save the world having invented the world's best wind turbine generator. He still posts telling the world that he is going to save us. He just wants to be told he is "special" as opposed to his real life in psychiatric care and on a pension.

MarkgaB5 aka Aphrodites Child is an oddity. He has been repeating the same theme in his posts for more than 4 years on science and skeptic forums. His posts never evolve. We had a rapid fire posting duel with him and he had to respond to every post. I think he has some severe compulsive disorder and this causes him to post. I imagine he has many other behavioural problems in real life.

On JREF, the moderators appear to allow two trolls to operate. Both are really stupid and their idiocy is entertaining. I'm suspicious that the JREF moderators are human and understand that people like myself enjoy dissecting trolls , or alternatively, the moderators allow the really dumb trolls to operate as "evidence" of how stupid trolls are, to warn off other potential trolls.

There was an interview/discussion program on BBC I saw a while back, I'm not finding it but lots of interesting stuff here: https://www.google.com/search?q=bbc+int ... net+trolls" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The thing I took from it was the troll tends to get a sense of superiority from it, from tricking those he/she interacts with.

The other thing that came out of it was that the best deterrent other that immediate banning is to simple ignore them and that removes the pleasure they get from trolling.

Attention, of any kind. Cluster {!#%@} Personality Disorder, in the MM-DSM 0.0176a.

They make stupid comments. Stupid people get their hackles up. Make stupid comments. Trolls feel like they're smarter than them, because they "don't get" their POV/humour/them. Smart people recognise the troll comments as troll/sarcasm/satire, makes them feel recognised as smart.

There's really no losing in their cluster-{!#%@} minds.

Or just stupid kids, who aren't allowed any kind of responsibility just for the lulz.

Some of them are shills for a Cause; especially something indefensible, but they might genuinely believe in it.

Did some rash person suggest that Matthew (singular indeed, and by any name and by any spelling) might be infantile?

Imagine such an intemperate judgment appearing here in this temple of judicious opinion!
Mind boggling.
. LOL…
NMB

P.S. But being somewhat rash myself may I suggest that it is inaccurate to infer infantilism from Matthew's outbursts.
Because they seem more pubescent in nature, reminiscent of the hormonal surges of a raging adolescence. .
And in our own species more consistent with the endocrine imbalances of the female than of the male.
As if every day were Menarche day to (the singular indeed) Matthew.

That definition fails. I post most of the stuff I don't like, but I don't call myself a troll. Well, except on the dance floor.

For this specific forum, it could be said that a larger portion of the members enjoy reading the odd and strange posts of "newbies" and "outsiders" who make weird and bizarre claims. When no outsider is currently posting strange posts, the same members hunt down weird people and link their strange thoughts here for discussion.

This is simply because Michael Shermer, one of our hosts, from the Skeptic Society authored a rather interesting book " Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudoscience, Superstition, and Other Confusions of Our Time"

Michael Shermer's book, our forum motto (see the banner title above) and our host, the Skeptic Society, has sort of established the character of this forum. Although there is a lot of "just mucking about" conversations going on (and a lot of bad humour), most members, generally work under this umbrella. People like Norma want to turn the forum into a cooking and gossip forum and have no interest in engaging with the "newbie weirdos". They want to make the forum like a normal "chat" forum, which would simply kill off this forum's unique character. There are only about ten or so forums like this. If people only want to talk about cooking they should go to a cooking forum and leave this forum to do its own thing.

I must admit that despite everyone coming from different countries, different backgrounds and different political views, most people here seem to get along quite well, which is quite pleasant and makes this forum enjoyable and informative.
