Interesting polling on Dem nomination from Michigan:

1) An Emerson poll in Michigan reflects the general pattern of other polls: Biden 40, Sanders 23; then Harris 12, Warren 11 with no one else able to garner even 5.

2) If Biden doesn't run, then Sanders reaps the largest benefit. Field without Biden: Sanders 42, Harris 23, Warren 18. I've been thinking that Sanders has a ceiling this time (as in '16 the only meaningful way to oppose nomination of the Cooler was to vote for Sanders) of about 25. OTOH Michigan is a state Sanders won in '16, so may be a bit unique.

There are news reports that the Democratic convention will be in Milwaukee. One can only assume that this is to ensure that Hillary finally gets to Wisconsin.

This is why I say Donald {!#%@}, to save time and words. Unlike Donald {!#%@}, I have no shortage of words, but I figure, why waste them?

I have to give Donald {!#%@} credit for reviving this embarrassing gaffe as a news item. We'd all forgotten it in the blizzard of BS coming from the White House.

It was Tim Cook himself who changed his Twitter handle to "Tim Apple." A normal person would be honored to have inspired such a change, but Trump has such a fragile ego that he can only see an insult that he must lash out against.
Not presidential material. Time to tell him: "You're fired."

Maybe not with Mueller but I see a lot of investigations of the orange one on the New York level.
some background and thinking about this: New York State Should Investigate the Trump Organization: The attorney general should open a special civil proceeding against the business and its officials.

I'm not on board with the many media reports (e.g., AP's) joking that Trump's budget is meaningless and that it should be taken lightly. A budget is a statement of intent and a guide to the real actions and values its author deems most important. It is the spending window into a plan of action.

In his budget Individual-1 is telling Americans who he is, what he values and stands for, which groups he will prioritize, and what actions he thinks need to be taken. Today's proposal is a bit of advocacy for a worldview and for pet policies as well as a campaign document for 2020.

That the budget is DOA does not mean that the issues it raises (the Wall; cuts to the safety net, healthcare, education, environmental protection, etc; increasing militarization of society and the federal government including preparations for wars; more redistribution of wealth and income to the rich; fictions of prosperity and growth; reduced investment in international cooperation) are somehow unserious, short lived, or funny.

Yep, not funny.

But he needs those cuts to education. So more people will look forward to the scenic coastal drive along the road he'll put on top of his wall. There, infrastructure! (Sorry! :-P)

Question for Groening by a reporter:
“Mr. Groening, what do you say to those who still deny the Holocaust?”

Groening:
“Nothing. They are hopelessly lost.”

Harvard Crimson (on why it refused to run an add by Bradley Smith):
“(It is) vicious propaganda based on utter BS that has been discredited time and time again.”

Pelosi: “I’m not for impeachment. This is news. I’m going to give you some news right now because I haven’t said this to any press person before. But since you asked, and I’ve been thinking about this: Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.

TPM speculates Pelosi did this now to let the rowdies (AOC, Tlaib, Omar, et al) know that she's drawing the line and/or because she's seen enough classified information in the briefings which she gets to conclude that there isn't enough evidence to make impeachment work politically.

Republican hack and far-right propagandist Hugh Hewitt is now promoting Seth Moulton as the Dems' best choice for president citing as positives Moulton's supposedly being in the mold of Scoop Jackson, Sam Nunn, Bobby Kennedy, and - I kid you not - Joe McCarthy. I am also happy he brings up being "soft" on Venezuela. It's going to be that kind of 2019-20.

Smartest move I've seen any politician pull in quite a while. "unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan....." ==>even a saving out clause. Well Done speaker Pelosi. Yes.......keep the troops pointed in a productive direction. Its exactly what should be said even if she is right now determined to impeach Trump. This is why its so good...........and she announced this position months ago: nothing to do with insider info.

Sebastian Gorka at CPAC: “They want to take your pickup truck. They want to rebuild your home. They want to take away your hamburgers. This is what Stalin dreamt about but never achieved.

Er, really? Stalin didn't want people to have hamburgers?

Anastas Mikoyan:
Mikoyan made several key trips . . . acquiring an important stature on the international diplomatic scene, especially with his skill in exercising soft power to further Soviet interests. . . . Mikoyan spent three months in the United States, where he not only learned more about its food industry but also met and spoke with Henry Ford and inspected Macy's in New York. When he returned, Mikoyan introduced a number of popular American consumer products to the Soviet Union, including American hamburgers, ice cream, corn flakes, popcorn, tomato juice, grapefruit and corn on the cob.[9]

Mikoyan spearheaded a project to produce a home cookbook, which would encourage a return to the domestic kitchen. The result, The Book of Tasty and Healthy Food (Книга о вкусной и здоровой пище, Kniga o vkusnoi i zdorovoi pishche), was published in 1939, and the 1952 edition sold 2.5 million copies.[10] Mikoyan helped initiate the production of ice cream in the USSR. . . .
Mikoyan cutlet:
In 1936, Anastas Mikoyan, who at the time was People's Commissar of Food Industry of the USSR, went on a trip to the United States to boost economic cooperation and study the development of the US economy. During his visit to the United States Mikoyan studied the system of Macy's department store in New York.[2] There Mikoyan took notice of the mass production of hamburger patties and ordered 22 hamburger-producing appliances. However, due to subsequent World War II, the production of patties in the Soviet Union failed and the so-called Mikoyan cutlets appeared instead.[2] The cutlets were usually made of pork or beef.[3]
Prominent Russians: Anastas Mikoyan:
During his three-month visit he did not only concentrate on the food industry - Mikoyan had a productive talk with Henry Ford and studied the system of Macy’s department store in New York. Upon his return, Mikoyan put some of his ideas into practice. He personally supervised the manufacturing of canned goods and sausages that turned out to be the Russian version of American hot dogs. Also, inspired by hamburgers, he launched the mass production of cutlets. His greatest love, however, was ice-cream, which contributed to the launch of the frozen foods industry and the transportation not only of comfort food but of many other goods that could be frozen.

Needless to say, many consumers all over the USSR liked Mikoyan’s innovations. Even Stalin once joked, “Anastas Ivanovich, when I see the passion with which you launch the ice-cream production, I realize that ice-cream is more important to you than Communism.”

For his innovations in the food industry Mikoyan was promoted to the post of the Deputy Chairman of the Council of People’s Commissars (the Council of Ministers).
How the Communists 'stole' beloved American foods:
Hamburgers on a bun were very much to the People Commissar's liking, and the notion of washing down burgers with sweet soda water first originated in the USSR. Mikoyan purchased 25 machines for making burgers, after which kiosks selling fast food and burgers inside a "city" bun for 50 kopeks appeared on the streets of Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev and Kharkov. The technology for making the buns was also brought from the United States.
Red bastards!

This is so deflating: according to Roger Cohen, in the NY Times this weekend, "A 21st-century American election is about to be fought over socialism."

Lawrence O'Donnell described the upcoming 2020 election campaign in the same way.

What this seems to signal is that mainstream opinion-shapers are signing on to Trump's campaign dishonest strategy. They haven't learned even the littlest thing from 2016.

I think Pelosi is right on impeachment btw. I probably wouldn't have announced it if I were she, but an impeachment proceeding would fail, and probably be a net plus for Trump.

OTOH running House investigations, as they are doing, into the many areas of Trump's activity in which he's practically invited such scrutiny can 1) provide the overnight of the executive that was missing in 2017-2018, 2) yield possible leads for criminal charges or for congressional action, 3) inform the public of what Trump has been up to, and 4) discover what we don't know (it's bound to be difficult for Trump). Of course, none of this will move the dial, as nothing seems too.

As to the Democratic field . . . that sinking feeling as one studies the list of candidates . . . but why not Mike Dukakis? He's only 7 or so years older than Bernie and Biden . . .

She gotta whip that house in order, stop the facking around perception Trump is a cartoon going away next time, and get the fack on with it...
True. On impeachment, she can live with (and will have to, despite what she said yesterday) fuzziness (the progressives are already explaining what she really meant). That's ok, IMO. But in general the delusions need to go away, I'm more concerned about the nature of the nominating campaigns than I am the House (interestingly, AOC made a respectful statement about Pelosi's "announcement"), which already seem to be taking on an air of unreality.

Stat Mech: There is nothing fuzzy about the Pelosi Masterstroke: keeping her party in line to WIN!!!!! Its called: LEADERSHIP.

The only fuzzy thing is your own contradictory analysis. All disconnected fuzz. Like a fur ball.......what kind of animal threw that up? Your recommendation/insight/post that she should have thought not to impeach Trump but to not announce it is EXACTLY WRONG.

At least: you are consistent.

WGBH says that Seth Moulton is going to announce that he's running for the Democratic nomination - Hugh Hewitt must have heard the same reports to prompt his column

Josh Marshall on Pelosi and impeachment, taking the position that Pelosi's announcement is not so consequential an, emphasizing the many House investigations, that impeachment steps are underway in any event: Did Pelosi fold?:
Even in its clown-show, play-acting 1999 version, impeachment is a serious, incapacitating process. There won’t be an appetite to fail at it once and come back four months later for another try. I don’t see what that will accomplish for the Democrats, the endangered citizenry and most of all for the country itself. If anything I think it would mildly empower the President to claim he was vindicated.

At the end of the day, it’s all beside the point. You must investigate and build a case. This is the best, really the most legitimate way to build a drip, drip, drip public case for impeachment. If you come up short, it still leaves debilitating damage going into 2020.

The Reptilians keep making "fearful" noise about it. And if the Dems simply keep doing the work, the fruits might show clearly what the outcome of the next elections should be to those who still need that clarity. It's not just Trump but even more so the party that spawned that thing.
