UFO disrupts Newark Airport!

Post by Abdul Alhazred » Fri Jan 25, 2019 4:36 pm

It was thought to be a drone, but now it's unidentified. You know what that means!

Maybe the drone that snarled Newark airport operations wasn't a drone at all
Chicago Trubune
... Officials with the Federal Aviation Administration said at 4:44 p.m. Tuesday they received two reports of possible drones operating near Newark Airport. One came from a Southwest pilot and the other from a United pilot who saw what they believed was a drone in the air as they prepared to land at Newark. However, an FAA spokesman said Wednesday, the agency has been unable to independently confirm the sightings. ...
Emphasis added. :shockd:

Drones don't fly at 3500 feet.
Doesn't mean they were UFOs.
But there's definitely something worth investigating.
Instead of shoving it into a box where it doesn't fit.
The job of a skeptic is to investigate the unexplained; not to explain the uninvestigated.

UFO == unidentified flying object

No more no less.

If it's unidentified, flying, and an object ...

I didn't think I'd have to explain that. The technical definition and the common usage of the term are different.

I don't know the air restriction distances for airports, but 9 to 17 miles away doesn't sound like 'near' to me.

Yeah, I was gonna say.... Regulations may limit drone height (for instance, in Canada the limit is 400 feet), but drones can physically fly higher.

Here's a video of one going from the ground to 4200 meters (it's a little boring until it breaks through the clouds):

But are we certain it is an unidentified flying object?

It is unidentified and flying. We've got that.

But have we ruled out orbs? plasmoids of orgone energy? Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin?

None of those are strictly speaking objects.

I'm the type of skeptic who knows when I don't have an answer. To me, the evidence remains currently unexplained.

If it is a hobby drone I suspect the aliens are gonna get angry - usurping their claim to UFO fame and all. But if just a balloon, an apparition, a swampy gas orb, a well-aimed fart from down under, or even a plastic bag - then surely they are used to these by now.

Whatever it is, we're better off finding out if it's a risk to safety and security. Better than kicking it around the skeptics club and ridiculing it.

True, but for most of the candidates it will never be known.

Once it's identified, it's not a UFO any more.

It's never a UFO in the airline community anymore. The risks to career and endless ridicule on social media are too great. "Drone" is a much safer term to describe an unidentified object in the airspace.

No, "drone" is a much safer term to describe the known objects, which are drones.
