Interestingly, the map does show a cooler area off shore California and I can confirm the weather for summer has been "mild." I was gonna buy a window a/c and mount it in the Man Cave to keep the in room below 100F...but so far, those temps have not been reached. Outsie...yes...but my tin can is shaded quite nicely by two redwoods. Still thinking of using that a/c to make a "beer locker" for summer brewing...but I don't actually want to drink that much beer.

My every 20 years beer review to see if my taste buds have changed is going nicely. I find i'm being attracted to Lagers that have a creamy mouth feel and taste. Can only drink 1-2 of them before returning to Heineken for constant imbibing. Constant: aka: until I fall asleep after 5.

This is about signal versus noise.
1998 was a very hot year, due to a major El Nino event, and heat records were set all over the world. Global warming deniers used that to suggest that there was no warming in subsequent years. They were misleading by misusing the data. We have to be very careful not to misuse data. Heat records in one year do not make a trend, and if we try to insist they do, the deniers will discredit our argument.

The world is warming. Of that, there is no doubt. But the evidence for that warming is the steady change over decades. Making silly claims based on one hot year will not assist in putting down the deniers.

This saying is fully consistent with good science. Single points on a graph are not a trend. One hot year is not a trend. The trend comes from decades of measurements.

You may recall, Bobbo, when Jim Steele tried to pull the wool over our eyes by posting a graph of 12 years global temperature starting 1998. The trend line was to cooling. This was cherry picking of the worst kind, picking an abnormally hot year as starting point. Even 12 years is not enough to establish a trend. It requires 20 plus years.

As I have already pointed out, Bobbo, the greatest heat record of all was set in 1913. Heat records have always appeared. I suspect a heap of them occurred well before humans even used thermometers. As individual points of data, they mean very little.

Lanced: take a guess....based on mathematics...if a trend line is going up, are you more likely or not to have record breaking ups? You evidently do not understand the characteristics of a trend line in a data set.

I splained it twice, then just above gave you a freaking picture with a SIXTY YEAR TREND LINE with the big label of : TREND. with an arrow to show where it was. And you continue on from one swallow to one year? There is no explanation for this other than undercooked pork.
