Google the phone number

Post by landrew » Thu Jul 19, 2018 2:27 am

I got a robocall threatening serious consequences from the "tax department" if I didn't call back right away. It includes language like, "we can't be responsible if this thing falls on you." I reported the scam, but I wasn't the first at all.
How dumb do you have to be?

My parents get calls all the time from chaps with Indian accents telling them 'their Microsoft is errors' and they should give them money and remote access. These 'experts' get really rude when I'm visiting, take over the call and they realise that I know a lot more about OSes, software and infrastructure than they do.

I wonder if you can get an app that auto-googles a call with an unknown number as it's ringing and displays the first few results.

Bad enough to live with the shame, then reporters show up, write up your story, get you to sign the release for publication...
Why, oh why make it so much worse?

Tax auditors don't phone you and tell you you are being audited. They show up and either do the audit if small, or take your records including computers. The guy should have known that.

These scam increased after the hackers started attacking banks of many countries. They have managed to breach and get some of the data about the account holders there so they started to phone them to show they are legit and ask for more information so that they can use their accounts online.

They used to claim it was made of "pork shoulder" but not any more. Why is that, you think?

Spam is still big in Hawaii. I bought a Spam cook book that included Japanese cuisine versions using Spam. I haven't tried to make anything yet. :D

A google search finds this...
According to Spam's website, the canned meat contains only 6 ingredients: already-cooked pork (two different cuts: pork shoulder and ham), salt, water, potato starch (to keep the meat moist), sugar and sodium nitrite (a common preservative).
... so maybe that 'ham' is pressed ham - including everything but the squeal... ;)

The flavor of Spam is moderated by the degree of starvation one has to suffer before eating it.

My father was drafted in WWII into the Australian Army. We were not over-paid, over-sexed and "over-here" like you Americans. Spam would have been a luxury. A king's feast.

Australians ate "Bully Beef".

Bully Beef (AKA canned corn beef) is a luxury item in Canada. I used to buy my brother-in-law one can of it every Christmas, but it's gotten too expensive.

Hmmm, not enough pigs in Australia for spam, I guess. Did they also do something with mutton?

Yep. Australia - where the men are men and the sheep are scared.
