Jesus for the Non-Religious
This book by John Shelby Spong is the closest thing to the book that turned me from theist to atheist. He doesn't just deconstruct the myths in the first third, he destroys them. You have to be strongly dissonant to get through that part. He also talks about how the stories came to be taught as they are, further destroying the idea that any denomination could be right. He tries to do something to sell his love for Jesus at the end, but it is completely unconvincing.
The funny thing is, my wife bought it at the annual state wide meeting of the United Methodists. It is marketed as something for believers to give their non-religious friends, but I wanted to read it before I recommended it to anyone. Maybe it wouldn't have the same affect on someone who was more staunch, but anyone who is truly interested in understanding the history of their religion should get something out of it.

My library has a copy of it in large type. But the online catalogue is fubar; here's the image they show for the cover of Jesus for the Non-Religious:
