May you all joyfully overindulge and not ever regret even one nanosecond of it.

Same back at ya! I spent my usual two hours Christmas shopping a few days ago. Late afternoon today, I ventured inside a church for a children's Christmas pageant. It's a bit melancholy, because inevitably my mind goes back over the 76 previous Christmas pageants I have attended (of which I'm sure I could recall about 50 if I tried very hard). Those days are gone, however, no use looking back. Again, it seems de rigueur to include the old plaintive American carol "Away in a Manger," which I find terribly poignant. The first time I remember hearing it was in a Christmas pageant at school, sung by a classmate of my brother's. The singer perished on a riverboat in Viet Nam in 1970, and I later visited the Wall in DC and made a point of locating his name there.

So, tomorrow morning, it will be just my wife and me to open presents under the tree, and I'll do my best not to get sad thinking of all those years, which seemed endless, when we had three happy little faces there tearing open packages. In those days, there was hardly room all around the tree for all the packages. I looked wistfully at our tiny tree tonight, with (so far) only three packages under it. And even our grandchildren are now adolescents, so no tiny kids...

Well, let's not have a downer here. Happy holidays to y'all...
