Countdown to ... ...

Post by Poodle » Mon Dec 17, 2018 9:52 am

... YULE!!!
Don't be fooled! Yule begins on December 21st at 10:23 pm. Well, it does here. For international persons, it's when it's very dark. It lasts for 12 days (yes, everyone else noticed the coincidence), which has been mentioned here before. Some people think it was a pagan religious thing. It was, but we know better - it's an excuse to get pissed as rats for an extended period of time because it's dark, cold and damp (unless you're called Matthew or have the rank of Major - but they're up for a party at any time).
It's a very sensible festival, as long as it doesn't rain. Snow's OK, but rain puts a damper on things. Mainly, though, you don't have to be a Christian with guilt or an atheist with misplaced feelings of rectitude - just get in there and enjoy (that was always the whole point).
So, to all celebrants ... God Jul!
You know it makes sense.

Ah - I haven't updated. I'm temporarily just south of the north-east corner of my living room.

Yall… Happy Winter Solstice! May you bask in the glow of a full moon and not be hit by any of those meteorites… Stay warm (or cool for you down unders), sober, between the lines if you are driving, out of custody, and of course not plagued by conspiracy theories… or Trumpists.

And so he was, Old-Style: 25 December 1642, Julian = 4 January 1643, Gregorian. (I believe that was also New Year's Day, at the time. There is no reason why the new year needs to start on the first day of a month.)

At least, winter is, as you Brits say, "well and truly" begun. (How does a phrase from the opening of Parliament become so universally applicable to everything? Last time I was in the UK and listening to the BBC during a snowstorm, the announcer said that a certain motorway was now "well and truly closed.") I find it enormously encouraging that the earliest sunset (at 16:14 in this latitude (45 north) and longitude (75 west)) has now gone past. However, as perihelion is still ahead of us, the earth is still racing around the sun at its fastest pace, which means that both sunrise and sunset, as measured by mean time, are getting later, and will continue to do so, until "Yule" is over. By that time, sunrise, which was at 7:14 a few days ago, will have slipped back to 7:32, and it will be well into January before it moves back to where it was in December. As I do every year, I find that, in direct contrast to the sunsets, enormously discouraging.

I never realised that 'well and truly' was mainly Brit usage. There, then - a Chrissy present of knowledge for me. Thanks!
