"Individualism" re-reconsidered

Post by Upton_O_Goode » Tue Jan 30, 2018 5:23 pm

[url=https://delanceyplace.com/view-archives.php?p=3516]Here's[/url a nice balancing piece for fans of the John Wayne, rugged independent cowboy genre to consider.

So, these cattle barons had their trotters in the public trough. And probably the sheep ranchers did too. I always thought so. My rural-Illinois family raged against the Oppressive Hand of Big Government throughout my childhood, conveniently forgetting all the farm price supports, Soil Bank subsidies, and mainly the fact that they got electricity on their little homesteads through a blatantly socialist electrification program that Lenin would have been proud of, paid for by taxes on their city neighbors. Naw, we didn’t mind building Grand Coulee Dam, Hoover Dam, NASA, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and the like, every one of them a huge government program. We all got a lot of cheap electricity out of them, and we got the Internet, a lot of micro-computers, and other benefits. But I still resent my cousin telling me, when I lived in Tennessee, that he was paying part of my electric bill, since I was getting TVA power. And who paid for the electric lines out to his house so he could watch Green Acres every Friday night?
“When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men in a society, over the course of time they create for themselves a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.”

― Frédéric Bastiat (1801–1850), French economist

FTL: "But if you go to try a thing on in this Western country, you've got to do it well.' /// Total BS. "The West" was for people who could not make it in the City. The safety valve/outlet for the malcontents and misfits "and there were some good ones too............" ha, ha.
