The Bible to metaphorical.

Post by Zetsubou_Sensei » Tue Mar 15, 2016 8:54 am

A classmate in university who studies biology with me tends to constantly state the Bible is a metaphor when in class. He is aware that evolution is true, but alters it in a way that fits with the Bible, for example, being one in spirit means to have empathy, being holy like God is means to be a good person regardless if you believe in God, and the blood of Jesus is internalizing his teachings, god made evolution happen.

And that when the bible is seen as metaphorical, it is true because it explains exactly what science does and more, such as supernatural stuff.

How do I respond to this?

a) The bible may be seen by some as wholly metaphorical now, and it certainly contains bits were were always meant to be metaphorical, but its original intent was not to be metaphorical. To regard it as such is rewriting history.
b) Anything metaphorical is ... errrrrmm ... not strictly true. End of that story. If the bible is metaphorical and explains what science does, why not just dump it and read the real scientific explanations?
c) Bible thumpers will wriggle more energetically than anything else in the universe has ever wriggled in the attempt to retain relevance for a set of Bronze and Iron Age fables.

Personally, I'd start with there is no God and there is nothing supernatural. Leaves time for more beer.

Reading the Bible as pure metaphor is like reading Nostradamus as pure prophecy -- sure, you can force it to make sense to you, but you're still wrong.
"Knowledge grows through infinite timelessness" -- the random fictional Deepak Chopra quote site
"Imagine an ennobling of what could be" -- the New Age BS Generator site
"You are also taking my words out of context." -- Justin
"Nullius in verba" -- The Royal Society ["take nobody's word for it"]

Quite right. Read the metaphor and then ask what the metaphor represents. Usually, only the requirement to give up your own humanity and completely submit to the arbitrary and emotional demands of an angry god. Thats old Testament. New Testament: believe and act in ways that will have your life be a total misery.

Or just give lip service, hate those who diagree, and do whatever the hell you want to when not sitting in the pew. Thats another metaphor.
