Science quiz... ala PEW

Post by TJrandom » Thu Jan 28, 2016 7:47 am

Here is a science quiz from PEW research. I missed one question - the question that was most missed. Bummer. Enjoy!

Don`t go here until you have taken the quiz above....

I got one wrong too. :( I'm sad about that. I got the magnifying glass one wrong.

And by the way . . .

Well crap. I missed the water boils question. for some reason, I equated "has to boil for a longer time, with higher temps"==ha, ha. Must have been the altitude.

I wonder what "grade" that test is for? Like 5th grade or is this an intro course now?

Look at the second link... it isn`t for any grade level, but rather to explain science knowledge across age, education, socioeconomic groups.

I too missed the boils at altitude question - unable to reason it out, and never having had experience that touched on it.

Bugger!!! I got the magnifying glass question wrong as well. And I actually knew the correct answer. But then I'm short sighted (maybe? Please?).

That does seem much more obvious than the boiling water question.

I got that one right by visualizing it, and remembering the saw... the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of refraction.

I got it by remembering frying ants on the sidewalk. Magnifying glass, sun on one side, hot point of light on the other. A totally visual memory.

Ah - I've read the second article now. Apparently, I'm on the introverted side of extroversion and I'm {!#%@} ancient. And a bloke. That totally explains why I got the magnifying glass question wrong. I'm also an ex-hippy, so I know in my soul I got it right(ish).

You answered 12 of 12 questions correctly.

I thought they would be harder. Guess I was just lucky enough to know those particular questions. They could have asked completely different questions that everyone else would think was easy, but I would consider implausibly difficult.

Plus, I'm Canadian. We tend to be smarter than Americans. ( :innocent: :wgrin: )

As Gord pointed out, us 'muricans are dumb. I got 10/12. None of the choices for answers were God did it. Thus, it's biased. I blame Obama.

12/12. I did have to stare at the water boiling one a bit -- it was dumbly worded. Plus, having no knowledge of the topology of Denver threw me for an initial loop, even though that's not actually necessary for the question. Again, badly worded.

For the explanation, higher altitude means lower atmospheric pressure. Less pressure means things boil easier. Therefore, the higher altitude location boils water at a lower temperature. In an extreme example taking this to a further extent, water in space would (to my knowledge) boil at room temperature.

With no data at all, I would still bet Americans do the test 15 seconds faster than Canadians. We got things to do.

No.... I'm just sniveling. I swear: I coulda got the boiling water question if I had slowed down to think a bit. Thats a thing with me and tests. I don't care..... until they get scored. THEN, I hate each question I get wrong.

Ha, ha. I'm just a stoopid hooman.

I got them all right, but it's not fair because I teach Physics.

The boiling question I knew because I'm into cooking.
