Scientific reasoning, intellectual honesty and open-mind

Post by JJM » Wed Aug 18, 2010 10:02 am

landrew wrote:Actually it's a cornerstone of my skepticism that I could be wrong and I don't know the answers to all things, the way so many skeptics seem to do. If I made so many "skeptical" negativist assertions, such as X, Y and Z do not exist based on lack of sufficient evidence, I'd feel like I was probably wrong, just because of the fallacious reasoning.

I've called it scientific reasoning, intellectual honesty and open-mindedness, but I suppose it still lacks sufficient clarity because it is still causing rancor, such as awhile ago when it was considered an ad-hominem insult; I was supposedly implying that everyone else was "intellectually dishonest."

So lets just say ol' Landrew here is more likely to keep his mouth shut about certain verdicts, than to make certain declarations about their nonexistence.
Here you are, Landrew, your own thread on your primary topic so you don't have to interrupt any other threads. Now, when you want to make baseless assertions and interject your own notions, just copy the post to which you are replying over to this thread and pontificate-away.

Skeptic's slogan : "Keep an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out."

Everyone appreciates an open mind. However, there are limits to everything. There comes a point where keeping an open mind on something just becomes stupidity.

For example : I am not open minded about ghosts. If they exist (doubtful), then they are indetectable. How do I know this? Simple. Because literally thousands of people have been trying, with great enthusiasm and energy, to detect them, and the net result is failure.

So guys, do you not all agree that keeping an open mind has its limits? And that on some things, keeping that mind open is just silly?

You could have made a screenshot, then used the color picker in GIMP, and got the exact color. Or simply look at the HTML source. Well, I guess it doesn't matter anymore.

EDIT: I just looked at the source and it might just be faster to do the screenshot method.

You folks have derailed this thread- it is intended for landrew to school us on himself and his philosophy.

Let me try again: landrew, in your opinion, if a tree falls in the forest and there is nobody there to hear it- does it really fall?

Don't be shy, express yourself. Since X never equals zero I am sure you have an opinion.

Just so's ya know you weren't alone in not understanding how it was done right away, it took me awhile, too. What first brought it to my attention, was that it was on comments that I never would have "thanked", (sorry, Gord), then I ran a search and saw that it was on all of Gord's comments. so began to type a message Pyrrho in the question/notification section to tell him that someone had hacked into the system when I thought, "Wait a minute, if someone had hacked into the system, they wouldn't have "made me" thank ONLY Gord! That's when I figured out he was messing around with his signature line. (Which is why I posted "Gord!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) LOL

Also, it took me longer than that to realize it was "Spanks" instead of "Thanks", but I attribute that to tiny type on my screen.

Gord, thanks for doing that! Great idea and good fun. :) I'm trying to figure out who I should use "yanks" for .. there are so many who it could be used for, it's "hard" to choose! :P

I spotted what Gord was doing when he first started, because he wrote Ruben Lopez, instead of ruben lopez, as it would have been had ruben been thanking him.

All you gotta do is hover your mouse over the name and if it becomes a vertical I-beam, it's text, if it becomes the little pointy finger hand thing, it's a link to the user's profile
That's only if it says "Thanks" above the user's name. If it says something other than that, you're on your own.

unrelated topic: I got 100 bucks says Anchor admits there is no evidence for God or 150 that rrichar admits the biblical authors had nothing even remotely resembling science in mind when they wrote the bible before landrew posts in this thread.

I just got my decimal key fixed on my keyboard. It should have read 1.00 and 1.50. The period key works just fine, I don't know why I didn't use it. Sorry for the confusion.
Anyways, glad that's straightened out, it depends on who landrew dislikes more. If he dislikes me more, he'll post so you can win the bet. If he dislikes you more, he'll stay away so I can win the money.

You're getting the short end of the stick, staying away is indefinite, which means I could always argue " not yet ", so by time he doesn't post, I might have already spent the money I would owe, or even have died.

or, on second thought if we set a time limit, he'd just wait 'til the times up, then post.
