Some theories are up for skepticism and are far-fetched; I have tried to put forth some explanations around a few of the glaring topics:

You start your discussion with the Great Pyramid of Giza build ca. 2500 BCE, but you don't seem to pay any attention to the fact that it came after a period of architectural evolution from mastabas. These began in pre-dynastic times as simple, flat stone buildings. Over the over the long life of the Old Kingdom (Dynasties II, III, and IV) mastabas became more and more complex, gaining tiered layers, with larger bases and smaller upper levels. The Pyramid of Djoser was built in the 27th Century BCE with 6 layers of mastabas. Over the next 100 years, pyramids got bigger and bigger, and the steps between mastabas began to be filled to have a smoother surface until the Great Pyramid of Giza was built. Pyramids continued to be built after this as well.

And, of course, the brain cases have an excuse for this. They ignore established chronology and say the smaller ones are "degenerate copies of the original Great Pyramid."

Yeah. :frown: Those were the days, eh?
I honestly don't mind these shows (actually, I greatly enjoy UFO stuff cuz it's all sorts of fun), and to be fair, at least the Ancient Aliens shows generally follow traditional History Channel formula.

It's the ever-growing spate of reality shows that I'm tired of seeing. They ought to branch off to a new network called "History Reality" for that stuff, and keep to the classic format for the regular History Channel.
Reality shows suck round donkey objects. And I too like(d) some of the UFO shows. But they're airing things now that go so over the top, I squirm in discomfort. People state such incredibly false things as if they're fact, and too many viewer out there don't know enough to understand it's all road apples! In The Olden Days, they would put on UFO shows where people actually investigated sightings and came up with possible solutions! I remember one show that I only ever saw once, that used some newer computer imaging techniques to enhance an old video recording of a UFO apparently flying behind a mountain along the horizon. They compared and combined a number of different frames, and the blob-shaped UFO actually took on the shape of a small single-engine plane! Then they played an enhanced negative of the video, and you could see the UFO passing in front of the mountain (in other words, between the mountain and the camera that was filming it), rather than disappearing behind it. One of the earlier UFO "researchers" on the show had actually used the "fact" that the UFO passed behind the mountain in order to calculate its size, which made it larger than two football fields in length!

That, I thought, was an amazingly good show. I wanted to see it again, and even tape it for my own personal repeated viewing. But I've never seen it again! It's a shame, because I wanted to investigate further, to see if they'd actually manage to solve that one sighting, or if they'd misused the imaging technique to falsify a mundane solution. :( (Hey, I am a skeptic, after all. I'm hardly going to take one TV show's word on anything.)

That was Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World. On other shows he had some really strange stuff.

A lot of those ancient alien ideas don't even make sense. Like, for instance, the gold trinkets in Colombia that look like modern A-4 Skyhawks, or that helicopter hieroglyph.

The aliens came here on ships that can conquer gravity and jillions of light years of space. So why would they need something that had wings or rotors?

Or the Nazca lines. Why would they need landing strips? If they did need landing strips (such that the locals would imitate them), then who builds landing strips out of uneven rock-strewn fields?

But I guess if you assume that aliens are flying around the universe on rock-stacking missions, I guess anything is possible.

They are simply desperate to find anything that supports their theories. And they always find fools who will nod and say, "Yeah, that makes sense, man!"

Yes, except for this part:
Then they played an enhanced negative of the video, and you could see the UFO passing in front of the mountain (in other words, between the mountain and the camera that was filming it), rather than disappearing behind it. One of the earlier UFO "researchers" on the show had actually used the "fact" that the UFO passed behind the mountain in order to calculate its size, which made it larger than two football fields in length!
That isn't in the episode of Arthur C. Clarke Mysterious World.

I agree that the videos were similar, but the one I'm remembering was longer. The Catalina video only seems to be two or three seconds long, and doesn't show the object flying across the face of the mountain to reappear on the other side.

Childress's deer-in-the-headlights look can be hypnotic though. "Humans could never have piled two rocks together like that. IT HAD TO BE ALIENS!!!1!" I saw a great cartoon, that I promptly lost, showing an alien talking to a human and pointing at one of those giant-donut-on-the-roof stands. "Of course it was us! You don't think they could have done that with 1950s technology, do you?"

Right here:
woodenbird-notcharrow.jpg
You've got to admit, the tail is a little strange. Bird tails are horizontal, wheras this tail is vertical. I don't think that it can be explained by allowing for a grip point.

I'm just admitting that they have a point about the bird's shape. I'm quite clear, though, that I don't believe this is any reason to expect that the ancient Egyptians were flying around in large wooden gliders.
It is not strange if the figure is considered not a representation of a bird but a hybrid. Mythological creature combining features of farious animals. The tail may well be a tail of a fish. The "model" combines elements of several animals - for example the head is not a bird's one, neither is the torso.

You have a copy of the Vaimanika Shaastra? That's awesome! I love the Vimanas! I wrote about those in my second article.
I just wanted to post this here 'cause it's the only reference to the Vaimanika Shastra that I could find on the forums.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/ ... o_ancient/
DSAArchaeology wrote:...von Daniken and the Ancient Aliens TV show claim that the Vimana are attested to and described in the ancient Vedic texts of India. However, the book they actually quote for a description of these Vimana is a book called Vimanika Shastra, which is not an ancient Vedic Text. The Vimanika Shastra appeared in the 20th century and was produced via psychic dictation. The “author” claimed that through a psychic link he was channeling a lost Vedic text....
And https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaim%C4%8 ... #Appraisal
J. B. Hare of the Internet Sacred Text Archive in 2005 compiled an online edition of Josyer's 1973 book, in the site's "UFOs" section. In his introduction, Hare writes
The Vaimānika Śāstra was first committed to writing between 1918 and 1923, and nobody is claiming that it came from some mysterious antique manuscript. The fact is, there are no manuscripts of this text before 1918, and nobody is claiming that there are.
Despite the fact that programs like Ancient Aliens keep referring to it as an ancient text, the Vaimānika Śāstra was allegedly written using "psychic channeling" in the early 20th century.

There are people, however, who do claim it was passed down to the author either verbally or in writing through thousands of years. But you've got to expect that kind of claim to arise no matter what, given enough time and enough people desperate to believe it's a valid document.

So yeah, once again Ancient Aliens is lying about one of its sources, in this case about the Vaimānika Śāstra being an "ancient Vedic text".

I didn't know the ancients had cell phones, never mind texting.

Excellent review/factoid. Thanks. I do watch AA as I like the background scenery....but the show is on par with Ghost Hunters and the like. Hard to believe it sells enough advertising to keep it on the air.

Ghost hunter shows used the same stupid formula as the movie Blair Witch Project. A bunch of people filming in the dark, and saying "did you hear that?" every few seconds. It works as bait until everyone figures out that they never find anything.

Ancient Aliens is a bit better. They do have a few serious researchers contributing to the show, but a lot of pseudo-experts simply reading a script, with no actual expertise in the subject they are speaking about. I don't watch the show, it makes me tired. But I credit those researchers who simply gather evidence and ask questions about it. What's unscientific about that? The speculation? So what? Everyone has an opinion based on their own speculation, but that doesn't necessarily make them "unfounded claims." If we can't tolerate and debate alternate ideas civilly, we aren't much good to society.
The job of a skeptic is to investigate the unexplained; not to explain the uninvestigated.

You!butyawhat?youjustsaid... *blusterfuss* of course it sells enough advertising! People like you keep watching it!!!

Seriously. This is the third time in three days that I've heard the same thing about Ancient Aliens, which is basically: "I watch it for the lulz, I can't believe people watch it, how does it stay on the air?" And if I extend that back as far as I can recall, you're probably the eighth such person I can remember saying the same thing! In fact, eight might be too low. Lemme count:

you, Ed, Art, Nun, Dobs, Griff, Ray, other Ray, Justin, 2 anonymous people on Youtube, 2 people whose names I forget on another old forum....

Jeebus, I'm up to 13 just off the top of my head.

Yeah. I too feel "ashamed of my species", but for a very slightly different reason.

I forgot Ama. And Don. Oh yeah, and Don's girlfriend!

If I start adding people I've known who watched it because they believe at least some of the nonsense presented on Ancient Aliens, the list would only grow by three or four. Hmm. Okay, only three, I can't think of a fourth.

One thing I have never understood?
Aliens come to earth
The best building technology they can impart is stacking rocks into pyramids?
And then, for some reason, the only use for these piles of rock is for burying kings/pharoahs
The romans build aquaducts, sewers and used an arch to overcome the spanning of column problems, shouldn't the aliens have been able to do better?
