Car accident deaths

Post by Lance Kennedy » Mon Apr 15, 2019 1:50 am

From Stephen Pinkers new book, and for Americans, since the following data is for the USA.

Car accident deaths have dropped, per 100 million vehicle miles, twenty four fold since 1920.

Back in 1920, the figure was 24.
1930 it was 15.
1940, down to 10
1950, about 8
1960, now 6
1970, to 5
1980, now 3
1990, fallen to 2.5
2000, now 2
2010, about 1.

It appears that the concern with road safety has paid off!

Just to add to what I posted, according to Pinker, the death toll from horse caused accidents BEFORE the motor car was at least double that of the 1920 car death rate. Horses are dangerous!

Pedestrian deaths have come down too.
From 12 per 100,000 people per year in 1935, down to 2 in 2015. That is still 5,000 pedestrians killed in 2014, which compares to 44 killed by terrorists, with far more publicity.

Aircraft accident deaths have fallen from between 5 and 6 per 100 million passengers per year in 1970, to about 0.1 in the year 2015.

I was going to ask you that question re airline (not aircraft) deaths but couldn't get past how the numbers could change. shave a few years off the front and the exponent changes greatly. Still remarkable....hmmmm....the industry and politics...more behind not getting sued for millions for AVOIDABLE accidents. How safe how fast would cars have gotten with million dollar verdicts for crash effects?...or even the crash itself???

..............the NRA learned the lesson.
