OK - so a meteorite is the only thing against which we need to build fantastical science-fictionish defences. You've saved the Earth a lot of money there, Gord. You can be very proud.

Uhhhh.... A meteorite is just a rock lying on the ground. It's not gonna hurt very many people, unless you starting chucking it at their heads.

Nice dictionary exercise. Since they are slicing the baloney in such thin slices.........is the definition given of meteorite "exactly" correct as in what do you call a fragment of a meteoroid or an asteroid that hits the ocean and not the GROUND?...........or a lake?? .... and then the lake dries up or still has water in it?...........dare I mention Ice Flows??

Ground: 1. The solid part of the earth's surface

but:

2. The loose soft material that makes up a large part of the land surface

I mean, its just so confusing and the chart doesn't even include "someone who gains fame, fortune, or other success in a realtively short time.

Since this thread is already gone cattywampus, I'll just say that words are tools, and dictionaries are reference tools. There are no universal, infallible meanings. As an analogy: Nuts and bolts have standardized threads, which benefits everyone, but any machinist can make customized nuts and bolts to suit their own purposes. Similarly, it's a living language, and words can have divergent meanings, where they are needed. Holding up a dictionary like a holy bible and declaring it to be the final authority is silly. A wordsmith crafts the language to extend the meanings of writing beyond dictionary definitions.

A meteorite - from a few grams to several dozens of tonnes... size doesn't matter. Now where have I heard that before? Sooo if a large asteroid hits the earth - say a kilometre in diameter, does it suddenly become a meteorite?

This year, suddenly, out of nowhere, young people have been pronouncing the word "hearth" as if it rhymed with "earth". WTF??

It's hearth, ya idjits! Rhymes with Darth.

Seriously, where does this come from? It's so sudden, and so widespread! From the west coast of Canada to London, England. How? How? How?

I'm sorry I missed this at the time you posted, JO. That may well, at the time, have been the dialect required but. today (so much later), it's known as pretentious BS. Just thought you should know.
You should also know that your sculptures are just that, JO - YOUR sculptures. All else is mere taste and preference, and worth very little in the scheme of things. Keep on sculpting!

Poodle........have I missed this seemingly aggressive negativity in you? I mean.......directed at me, its understandable, but at Jo? Over "art?"

But I agree. Art is a very worthwhile activity. We should all engage in it "by and for ourselves." Buying other peoples' art is ok if you know them personally and really like the piece. The "art market" otoh: nothing but a con job. My favorite very explicit example is the Rockefeller Family creating and getting rich from nothing over African Masks. Very instructive bit of history there.......applies to soup cans and all manner of art. "A conspiracy between rich people and artists to make poor people think they are dumb." ((But more importantly to have somewhere to hide their money when they tire of houses and yatchs.))

The pretens will never go away! Its an essential fluid in the jiant art skam machine! An art form in itself!

I never really wanted to be a professional artist but it woud be better than most ordinary jobz. The few thingz I'v made that were just art were just kuz I wanted to make them.

A fundamental problem with art az a profession iz that they need to work wether they hav an inspiration or not. And wen the money gets BIG, greed takes over and they start cranking out pure krap.

Just to clear things up, I didn't direct any negative comments to JO. I was encouraging JO. For bobbo's enlightenment, I was not talking about JO's art. Never having seen it, I couldn't comment on it. I was making the point that JO's art is JO's business and isn't answerable to the opinions of anyone but JO.

PS ... I've never been to Quebec.

I've re-read the point and can see the parallel constructs. More ambiguous than my own negative wash gives things. It is excellent that Poodle and Jo agree Poodles comments were positive.......being positive is always better than being negative........unless live wires are the issue. The best position of course is to see BOTH constructs and to hold opinion until any ambiguity is corrected. So....I am corrected.

Can't wait to do it again.......................... ((because, I'm only human.))
