It appears that someone, possibly in East Asia, is still producing ozone-depleting CFCs.

...Although Montzka and his colleagues could not pinpoint the exact location of the new emissions, some of their observations and models offer clues as to where they might be coming from. They found that the difference in CFC-11 concentrations between the northern and southern hemispheres has been increasing, which points to a northern hemisphere source.

They also modelled the movement of air masses reaching the Mauna Loa observatory, and correlated levels of CFC-11 to other chemicals associated with anthropogenic emissions. Together, this analysis suggested the emissions are coming from east Asia....

I used to use 1,1,1-Trichlorofluoromethane to clean compressor parts.

Couyld be from recycling. A lot of junk gets shipped before being torn down as scrap. Old refrigerators and air conditioners would not be gas vacated before shipping and recyclers might not have an incintive to save something they could not later sell.

New Scientist reported that, too. It appears someone is making it. Sooner or later, they will be caught.

Just to add to my last post.

The latest New Scientist has a further report suggesting the problem comes from China. The Chinese are the world's biggest recycler of fridges, freezers and air conditioners. It appears that this is done by numerous small scale operators who are really, really careless about collecting the CFC remaining in the unit.
