The biofuel swindle

Post by Lance Kennedy » Thu May 10, 2018 11:12 pm

Carbon taxes are supposed to be a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ameliorate global warming. However, the rules have loopholes. One of the most colossal loopholes is that of biofuel. Since biofuel is potentially able to regenerated, it is considered carbon neutral in the rules. Sadly, that is not the case.

The problem is that biofuel is generally from tropical forests that are cut down. If those forests were replanted, no problem. But most of the trees involved come from third world countries and those forests are simply clear felled and the land used for farming. Tropical forest cover is dropping in those places, and the nations that import the biofuel are using it to reduce carbon taxes. There is a very large net carbon emission, and the use of biofuels is simply making global warming worse, as well as seriously reducing tropical forest habitat, putting wildlife at risk.

Time to change the rules ?

Its not just tropical forests but USA farmland as well growing corn. I would propose the actual banning of bio fuels from plants in the ground grown for such purposes.........and there doesn't even have to be a ban, just stop the tax advantage given to such Big Ag.

Its a good idea, until hoomans get involved. Bio fuels from waste products: still supported. Bio fuels from anything grown in a tank: still supported.

The worst is palm oil added to diesel to make a fuel. Tropical rain forest is cut down to grow oil palms, and the carbon emissions are excessive, as well as the danger to wild life from habitat destruction.

Yep. Saw a special last night re Indonesian village farmers/villages totally self sufficient who called their lives "Idyllic" until the gubment came in, forcibly moved them, plowed over their fields and gave the land to Big Ag. Now in the city, they are looked at as poor people everywhere are.

Real tragedy.....on various fronts.

The biofuel swindle usually ignores its contribution to ocean dead zones. The spike in food prices is also hand waved away because speculators make scads of money.

Just noticed that the silencer on the gun held by Olegs avatar is not aligned. If he fired a bullet out of that gun, he would have a problem.

I would have thought gun and gun silencer threads were hard to strip? That gun must have silenced a lot of opposition.

The latest New Scientist has some data on this.

Between 1990 and 2025, forest cover changed by :
Increase of 1.3% in developed nations.
Increase of 0.3% in middle income nations.
Decrease of 0.7% in low income nations.

However, a big part of the deforestation in low income nations is driven by high income nations, such as the EU. It was responsible for 36% of the forest cover loss by buying goods grown where poor nations destroyed forest.

It matters not that the outside profile of the silencer seems off, but rather that the bore is aligned. Maybe it was built that way on purpose - to throw off skeptics. ;)
