Glacial river in Yukon changes course

Climate change causes glacial river in Yukon to change direction

Climate change has caused the massive Kaskawulsh Glacier in the Yukon to retreat so much that its meltwater abruptly switched direction, in the first documented case of "river piracy" in modern times.

Instead of flowing into the Slims River and then north to the Bering Sea, the water has changed course and now flows south toward the Kaskawulsh River, the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean, scientists have found.

Also known as stream capture, river piracy is a term used to describe a geologic phenomenon where a stream or river is diverted toward another body of water. It's usually caused by a dramatic tectonic event, such as a landslide or glacial dam collapse.

"This was the first event we could find where river piracy occurred right under our noses and due to contemporary climate change," said Dan Shugar, a geoscientist at the University of Washington Tacoma and lead author of a study published Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience....

...As a result of the glacier retreating about 1.9 kilometres over the past 100 years, the meltwater had now found a steeper gradient down to one river instead of the other, said Best....

Hmmm

Evidence of natural glacial retreats are well documented. John Muir reported massive glacier retreat in Glacier Bay in the 1870s. 80% of the glacier mass in Glacier National Park had been lost by 1945 as exemplified by the Sperry Glacier. Neither change can be attributed to CO2.

Image

The Great Aletsch, the largest and best studied of all the Swiss Alp’s glaciers beautifully illustrates the 3000-year cooling trend punctuated with periodic warm spikes that caused rapid glacier retreats. The Great Aletsch’s maximum length during the Holocene was reached during the Little Ice age. About 1850 it began retreating to its current position, represented by the red baseline.

During the warmth of the Bronze Age 3000 years ago, the glacier was Much smaller than today. During the cooler Iron Age the glacier began to grow, but rapidly retreated during the warm spike of the Roman Warm Period. The glacier advanced again almost reaching its Little Ice Age maximum, but retreated rapidly during the warm spike during the Medieval Warm Period.

But now any glacial retreat is blindly attributed to CO2 global warming. Alarmists blindly embrace every changes as CO2 global warming ROTFLMAO.

There was a news report showing the drying up river bed of the old river and a view to the horizon of where the new river was going. I can't picture in my mind how a glacier "merely" shrinking would allow it to change which way it flows? Should always be downhill???? Ha, ha....I assume some kind of other change happened but got in the way of the story?

Right after that news item, there was another show, different source, regarding the glaciers in Peru going away by 2050 or even earlier ((Maybe it was 2030?)) and all the high mountain village life would be terminated without any summertime water to grow crops/herd llamas and what not. There would have to be traditional life further down the hill also affected?

Steele is exactly right though. Glaciers do recede and even melt away. Totally the same as ALL OF THEM going away. (Ftn for the feeble: ALL OF THEM.... for a huge geological area....... not all of them such as in Antarctica .... where potatoes don't grow anyway.)

The ground under a glacier is not perfectly flat, of course. So a slight rise (perhaps an outcrop of harder rock) could divert the flow of melt water.

Thanks Gawd: that made sense the moment I read it.

I've hiked a few glacial valleys with geologists who rattled on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on ... I guess it was educational, but I just wanted to know how to survive in one.
