Thanks for the recommendation. I'm at the top of a tall stack of reading right now, but I'll be sure to get it.
“It is certainly sad and regrettable that so many innocent people died…Stalin was absolutely adamant on making doubly sure: spare no one…I don’t deny that I supported that view. I was simply not able to study every individual case…It was hard to draw a precise line where to stop.”

If you haven’t and can get it read Lipstadt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem afterwards. It rounds things out nicely.
Also, Donald Trump is a clownfraud who only got involved in this for the attention.

I just brought the Stangneth book home from the library. I see that it's a translation. I'll start reading it, but since the original is in a language I can read, I'll try to order it as well. At my age, I need to keep up my languages, and this is the best way to do it.

I believe that this shows a key point in WWII:

I am pretty sure that the footage is authentic because it is professional quality without odd shadows.

I just get long suffering looks when she walks in on me watching some documentary on Auschwitz... :D

I need to block out some time over the next couple of weeks to watch it. It’s over nine hours so maybe some at work during lunch.

I don't know where to put this ... when I was in Berlin, I had lunch at a Mediterranean café (Salut?) on Augsburger Strasse, near the Kurfurstendamm. The sidewalk near the café had many of these memorial plates, called Stolpersteine (as of 2012, there were 30,000 of these across a number of German cities):

Each plate is imbedded in the sidewalk in front of an apartment building in which a Jew deported from Berlin lived and gives the name of the deportee; birth year; destination to which the person was deported; death and date, as far as possible.

I was told about these Stolpersteine by the cashier in the café whilst checking out. He told me about the plates randomly and urged me to look for them whilst walking. He said finds the plates very compelling daily reminders of those who perished but said that some people object to them. I later read that the objections are two-fold: the plates highlight victimhood, not the lives of those who were killed, and they are thought by some to victimize the murdered a second time as they sit amidst litter and are stepped on by pedestrian traffic.

Nice to see you, Charles. Perhaps you will reply to the many HC articles on Mattogno's new book about the Einsatzgruppen. Especially the now several-months-old series by Roberto Muehlenkamp on Jäger. When VFX was over here, he chickened out on this. Maybe you can show him the way?

For the last day of 2018, here's an interesting and inspiring 15-minute video, sent to me by a former roommate. Apologies if it's been posted before. I've been away from this thread for a while, but will be coming back this week, after I read Primo Levi's The Drowned and the Saved.

“It is certainly sad and regrettable that so many innocent people died…Stalin was absolutely adamant on making doubly sure: spare no one…I don’t deny that I supported that view. I was simply not able to study every individual case…It was hard to draw a precise line where to stop.”

Orange Anus on Afghan and Soviet history:
Russia used to be the Soviet Union. Afghanistan made it Russia, because they went bankrupt fighting in Afghanistan. Russia. … The reason Russia was in Afghanistan was because terrorists were going into Russia. They were right to be there. The problem is, it was a tough fight. And literally they went bankrupt; they went into being called Russia again, as opposed to the Soviet Union. You know, a lot of these places you’re reading about now are no longer part of Russia, because of Afghanistan.

No kidding. I don't think there is one correct statement in OA's babbling.

The unstated assumptions about why the USSR invaded and fought in Afghanistan are stunning (hint: it was to bring order to the recently established communist government by imposing Soviet control, not on account of terror groups) as is OA's account of how the USSR "changed its name" LOL

Actually, I'm surprised he doesn't claim this was told to him by Jimmy Carter. Nobody would have been in a better position to know.

Yeah, very moving. I saw a similar wall along the Jewish cemetery in Frankfurt.

Re: Documentaries

I just watched a 90-minute documentary called "Big Sonia". It's about Sonia Warshawski, a 92-year-old Holocaust survivor who lives in Kansas City. She's still very vigorous and runs the tailor shop her husband set up. They were both camp survivors. Sonia never liked tailoring, but when her husband got Parkinson's Disease and then Alzheimer's, she had to take over. She made it a thriving business. But most of the documentary focuses on the amazing activity she carries out to inform people about the Holocaust. Wherever she goes, she inspires people to get out and become active. She fears (with justification) that denial is on the upswing. Through a woman with a prison ministry, she gave a presentation to a bunch of convicts, all of whom spoke of how inspired they were. Until they heard her story, they thought THEY had had a hard life.

There were some very moving moments, as her son Morris tried to read a poem "Sonia at 32" that he had written for an anthology of poems by children of Holocaust survivors. He broke down the first time and couldn't finish. Later, he read the whole thing. Sonia's daughter Regina now accompanies her mother and gives an historical presentation to precede her mother's personal reminiscences. The stories of watching her mother marched off to the gas chamber, the beatings given to her by the guards, and especially the bitter irony of being shot by the guards as the British troops were moving in to liberate Bergen-Belsen (obviously, she survived), are riveting, and of course very difficult to hear. It's a bit sad also that the mall where the tailor shop was located closed down last year, but Sonia has set up shop again in a new location and her customers are loyal. So, it ends on an upbeat note. One girl who heard her talk five years ago has now graduated from high school and has already formed her own organization called EMPOWER. She now goes around to tell high-school students what she learned from Sonia.

There are some people who are simply world-wide treasures. Sonia is one of them.

The movie-streaming service (Kanopy) that I have through the local library has a number of Holocaust documentaries. I mean to watch them all. (I get four a month.)
“It is certainly sad and regrettable that so many innocent people died…Stalin was absolutely adamant on making doubly sure: spare no one…I don’t deny that I supported that view. I was simply not able to study every individual case…It was hard to draw a precise line where to stop.”
