Question for Groening by a reporter:
“Mr. Groening, what do you say to those who still deny the Holocaust?”

“Nothing. They are hopelessly lost.”

Goebbels, er, Stephen Miller has explained that Trump's past, full-throated, scattershot criticisms of the US differ to left-wing criticisms in that Trump has only been defending Western Civilization, Christendom, the world which white men made, well, this is how he put it:
Anybody who’s running for office, right, left, or center, always points out with they think America can do better and where America needs to go. But there’s a fundamental distinction between people who think that we need to lean into and strengthen America’s core values, whether it be our constitutional values, the rule of law, the principles of Western civilization, or people who think it would basically need to turn America into Venezuela.
So, you see, Trump can say whatever about the US - oh, and defend Putin or MBS, engage in a circle jerk with Kim, praise the illiberal right in Hungary and Poland - but if AOC or you or I were to be critical of aspects of American policy or political culture, we are trying to "turn America into Venezuela."

Also, we notice the sly attempt to differentiate Trump as someone "who's running for office" from AOC, Omar, Pressley, and Tlaib, as though these three House members aren't running for re-election.

You see, what Mr Miller wants you to understand is that when Bloatus replied to a question about Putin's penchant for murdering journalists, “You think our country’s so innocent?” he was defending Western civilization.

Likewise when he criticized the US for not going far enough in Syria and Iraq, where O should have been taking out the families of Isis members.

And when he whined about O being a pussy for not using waterboarding and other forms of torture.

What Bloatus was defending, literally, was Western civilization. Dark elements, to be sure, but Western civilization. About which we are supposed not to think but simply, reflexively bow down when Mr Miller intones about it.

Incisive, intelligent, inventive: a breath of fresh air. I would hope she has an important position waiting for her in any Democratic administration we happen to have. Maybe head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for President Warren? If not bigger things.

This kind of relates to discussion which Jeff_36 and I had some time back about cops & politics but is more relevant to Trump's effort to incite people against the Squad (hint: it's working): Gretna police officer suggests U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 'needs a round' in social media post - the chief of police in Gretna says that the threatening sentiments are actually no more than a violation of departmental social media policy

Trump and the reptiles still deny their statements are racist. so.........is the difference between Trumpism and Nazism the line between denial and promotion? Its about the only distinction I see........besides roundup and detention.........and making being a minority illegal. Ha, ha....writing it down does make those differences "stand out." I wonder if making minorities illegal and sending them back to where they came from is in Trumps "Struggle?" What kind of book/plan would all the twitters grouped and printed be?

They didn't have issues with statements like these by him: ''I don`t have to answer that.'' when Playboy asked him if marriage meant monogamy.

They'll probably love him even more if it turned out his promiscuity is a mechanism for him to deal with still being in the closet.

And Boris Johnson has been elected Tory leader, which seems, if dire for the UK, fitting for the Tories. Marina Hyde, where are you?

The UK having been maneuvered by Bolton into crisis with Iran, Johnson may find Iran and not Brexit his first order of business. DJT, taking this all as a pissing contest in narcissism and demagoguery, has tweeted that Johnson will be "great." He will need to be great at governing, as his parliamentary majority is likely to be just 2 by next week.

I know, I know, but stop laughing: look who the president of the US is.

Barr's DOJ appears to be nervous about Mueller's congressional testimony. They've given him instructions that the investigation itself is subject to executive privilege - a dubious doctrine that has always pertained, supposedly, to presidential deliberations or national security, not investigations of such.

In other words, Mueller is not to make a peep beyond the "four corners" of his report, explain it in any way - and most certainly not comment on anyone, ahem, not indicted. Which Mueller has already said is his stance, too.

So why the note too Mueller?

Since Mueller continues to position himself as being above the issues, reproach and contention - a modern day sphinx speaking in riddles and aphorisms, inscrutable, unassailable, always ambiguous - the DOJ can have bothered only to use the occasion of his House appearance to put down a marker for expansive executive power, not as it appears, out of concern for what Mueller will testify about.

If comedy is timing, the Democrats are unfunny. Mueller time's been over for months. I read this note by Elie Honig on the upcoming testimony yesterday:
. . . we are three months out from public release of the report, and Congress has not opened a formal impeachment inquiry, heard substantive public testimony from a single fact witness or even gone to court to enforce the subpoenas that the White House has repeatedly defied.

I puzzled over Jane Mayer's piece on Franken after reading it last night; IMO it doesn't deliver what it promised. In fact, it relies on a double standard - Franken is merely "clumsy" around others, including women, whereas other men are "handsy." The USO tour was "raunchy" so . . . so what? Really?

After showing how Tweeden's initial story had major elements that were dishonest and the charges themselves were orchestrated by the right, Mayer winds up - and Franken too - without really debunking the core element of Tweeden's charges, the "breast" photo. Franken himself, for all his self-pity, seems to get that consent was lacking in that instance.

Nor does Mayer ever really evaluate the charges of the seven other women, except to excuse, again, Franken's maladroitness with people. (Full disclosure: reading the piece I recalled a conversation I had some time ago with a person I met who knew Franken slightly - their kids went to the same camp - who told me that Franken is a gross, unpleasant, arrogant, obnoxious ass . . . which some of his defenders in the piece say, too, in different words.)

I think the piece grossly unfair to Gillibrand, of whom I'm not a fan btw.

Anyway, it left me where I was in the first instance: should Franken have toughed it out, despite the charges, which Mayer doesn't really refute?

This doesn't make any sense. Mueller and his report and appearance is A MARKER, defective as it is, AGAINST executive power. And Mueller actually telling "the whole truth" is certainly a cocern of Trump "Jesus Christ...I'm {!#%@}!". Who knows or cares what this mythical "DOJ" thing is you reference? ITS PEOPLE. Corrupt for the most part.

No, I think at that point he was done.

Coming from someone who doesn’t know him at all I liked him. But even without Tweeden the other photographic evidence by other women was damning. The whole handsy thing is not really excusable by just brushing it off as “oh, that’s just him being clumsy” or “oh, that’s just a New York thing.” I say the same about Biden but right now that’s not hurt him.

I try and not be a hypocrite. If I’m going to damn Trump for his pussy-grabbing then I have to do that with everyone. I think the short term harm that might happen is beneficial in the long run.
