It's kinda a little baffling, but then again not at all. Seems the unforgivable sin that would pop theTrumpian paytriot's bubble would not be any unsavory behavior regarding foreign interests, but the uncovering of the illusionary deal(s), the exposing of his ongoing financial lies and failures, the truth about his apparently inflated (reality TV star) wealth. Not sure how much fraudulent gains would move them tho...

In times past, a president whose campaign manager had been found guilty of 10 federal felonies and then witness tampering on top of that would be in deep {!#%@}. Not to mention all the other convictions (personal lawyer for starters) - and looming, serious charges (Stone) - of his close associates. What is wrong with this country?

Jesus, Marina Hyde is funny: With Theresa’s ‘turd’ deal flushed away, pray for an EU invasion

Marina sez:
As for what happens next, one Tory MP judged: “{!#%@} knows”. Welcome to {!#%@}. Population: us. In Westminster, an MP leaving the ERG meeting had called the mood “realistic” before adding: “but the question is, what is reality?” No. The question is, what is this complete bollocks? Morpheus, but if he was the member for Wycombe? In the north, Nigel Farage’s Leave Means Leave army girds itself to march south from Sunderland to London. And in Brussels, one EU diplomat warned ominously that “behind the scenes people are increasingly saying it is better to call it quits”, which is diplomatic speak for “so completely done with the UK’s {!#%@}”.

We might as well play out with former Brexit secretary David Davis, whose appearance before the eventual inquiry will, I fantasise, be lengthy and sensationally uncomfortable. “If we walk away,” David breezed breezily on Tuesday, shortly before U-turning and voting for a deal he had spent months pissing all over, “What can they do? They cannot invade you, can they?” More’s the pity. If only there was an option for “invasion by competent people”. They don’t have to be FROM the continent, but they do have to BE continent.
We used to have some Brexiteers here, and we were even told that T May was the second coming of the Iron Lady. (Perhaps tin? Or soggy cardboard? "May herself ploughs on. It’s as if someone has popped a grey wig on Munch’s The Scream, then cast it in an ITV drama about the female governor of a category-A prison.") The whole thing raises the question, whose shitshow is worse?

Manafort got a sentence well below the sentencing guidelines because Mueller went way outside DOJ guidelines to bring charges. He charged a general conspiracy against the US, five years, when there was specific conspiracy to commit money laundering available that has a 20 year sentence. The latter is what you are supposed to charge, since it its the crime.

It would have to be a state crime, and it's not. I think Manafort could have beaten this federal charge, but it would have to go to the Supreme Court.

He pleaded guilty to federal crimes, as charged in the DC case. The NY prosecutors are charging him with a variety of NY state crimes but not money laundering AFAIK ("eight counts of falsifying business records, three counts of mortgage fraud, three counts of conspiracy, one count of attempted mortgage fraud and one count of scheming to defraud" per The Grauniad). His best chance is somehow to argue double jeopardy.

This gang of criminals and thugs is getting really irritating.

As SM pointed out above, NY pros has to be very careful that their charges don't closely mirror what the Feds have already done...... but, yes, he ought to be thinking about changing his name to "Manacles"....

Now, is it possible Mueller/DoJ could eventually bring other, additional, charges relating to the initial investigation that have little or nothing to do with what has been charged so far?

See point #4. Trump told a story about people's lives in '16. It was full of {!#%@}, but a lot of people are full of {!#%@}. This time instead of a disembodied laundry list of policies, they need clear policy proposals that support a narrative about people's lives. Unlike Trump, this narrative and those proposals need to be for real and should appeal to what is best in people, not their full of {!#%@} side.
Or they could field a candidate who fervently believes in breathless enthusiasm, youth, bipartisan outreach, national healing, striking a pose, shirtsleeves, the image of something fresh - and listening and eventually having conversations about important issues . . . Beto 2020 Has No Reason to Exist: Of all the major candidates, he brings the least to the Democratic primary.

(good, short summary of Beto's record here, with links out to his voting record: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/201 ... presidency - remember: even Beto's bipartisan "conversation" partner from across the aisle says not to vote for him)
