Damn Socialists wanting to crush the Middle Class....
Ironic considering that income inequality grew by leaps and bounds once Regan pulled the “voodoo economics.”
Also, Donald Trump is a clownfraud who only got involved in this for the attention.

Ohhhh, I misread it! I thought it said 3 cops tortured an undocumated immigrant. It actually says the cops are the ones telling the reporter that three people did it.

Also, this:
...the thieves stole $1,387 the victim had in his pocket....
Where'd he get $1,387? I want $1,387 too!

Probably his life savings - possibly due to not being able to open a bank account.

My wife flipped on the TV last night. She had an old show on, from the '90s I believe. I was not even half paying attention but couldn't help hearing when one of the characters described duck l'orange or some other dish as being "rich as Trump and just as greasy."

And just as orange!!

Yes. Along those lines, I did our taxes yesterday. The GOP giveth and the GOP taketh away. Blessed be the name of the GOP.

The new 1040 form is only one page long, where it used to be two. Prominently missing are lines 6 and 39 from the old form, which counted exemptions. Each person filing got one exemption on line 6 (two exemptions on a joint return), and then one more on line 39 if blind or old (two more on a joint return). Thus an elderly couple such as my wife and I could claim 4 exemptions, reducing our taxable income by $8,100. Those exemptions were abolished.

The new standard deduction is $26,600 for a joint return, so for our hypothetical elderly couple, make that instead $18,500. If their total itemized deductions are less than this figure, the difference is not taxable in 2018 but would have been in 2017. It's a tax break. If their itemized deductions are more than this figure, the difference (up to $8100) is taxable in 2018, but would not have been in 2017. They get a tax increase. They might get an even further increase if they had local taxes exceeding $10,000, which would previously not have been taxable but now are.

So, under the old rules, I'd have had $33,000+ in tax exemptions and deductions. Under the new ones, I got $26,600, and had to pay taxes on $6400 that would not have been taxed previously.

Well, as StatMech pointed out, we had to rescue the multi-billionaires. From what I hear, they were desperate, hardly having enough money left to buy a legislature.

Early data show that refunds are down over 8% this year. This is not due to increases in taxes due on account of changes in withholding which came with the tax cut law.

The way I am putting this together is that those increases in take-home pay which were too small for people not to notice on a weekly or biweekly basis last year came in part from the withholding schedule changes followed by employers. Now people are surprised when the lump sum they expected as a refund at tax time is commensurably smaller - but as a lump sum, which makes it noticeable.

OTOH some of those relying on refunds report owing taxes. This tracks with estimates of the law's impact, which suggest that there will be 2-3% fewer taxpayers getting refunds (3 million people).

I read that something called Twitter is lit up with anger about this. {!#%@} with people's refunds and cutting taxes on the wealthy seem pretty damned inept on the part of Individual-1 and his pals. Even if the size of people's tax refunds don't tell much of a story, refunds are something people give a {!#%@} about. They're tangible and they are relied upon.

My wife runs a business and our taxes are always filed at the last minute. I have the sense, however, that we will actually pay more taxes than before the legislation because her business isn't in coal extraction, military contracting, receiving federal subsidies for not selling soybeans, or real estate. Also, she didn't donate to Individual-1's inauguration. So there you go.

He could have had one, if he opened his account at a time when he was legal. Most illegals are people who overstay visas etc.

That gibes with my experience. After looking at the final version, I realize that people with a large amount of itemizable deductions are simply going to be screwed by the abolition of the personal exemptions. That applies to people who (1) are paying off mortgages, (2) have high property and state income taxes, and (3) donate a lot of money to charity. Old people (and blind people), who get double exemptions, stand to lose twice as much.

That is human psychology. It accounts for the success of the Wentworth pitch: "I have a structured settlement, but I need cash now." Getting $50 a month in extra pay for a whole year doesn't thrill anyone. Getting a $600 bonus at the end of that year does. So the real psychological impact is precisely in the refunds. My philosophy has always been different. I want to minimize my refund by withholding as little as possible, and don't give a damn if I owe the government money when it comes time to settle up. Let the bastards wait for their money. But this year, I was curious to see how the new law would work.

"It’s all about the Benjamins baby." I think what the Democrats have really been lacking can only be antisemitic cracks from their House members.

Meanwhile Trump's polling has improved, apparently because he can read a bad speech poorly from a teleprompter, and congressional talks to avert Shutdown II are said to have collapsed.

WaPo and NY Times both featured opinion columns yesterday attacking Democratic proposals to tamp down the widening wealth gap in the US and to improve social programs, in the case of the NY Times disingenuously arguing that proposals for Medicare for All rely on deficit funding. The militant center is striking back, falling in behind Dear Leader who had courageously taken the lead against the plans of some Democrats to institute Stalinism on the Potomac.

The NY Times today is diving into the Democratic presidential nomination contest. A profile of Kamala Harris implicitly criticizes her as cautious and deliberate - and too hard on crime. Another column, by Alexander Burns, frames the question facing Democrats this way:
Down one path, Mr. Booker’s, lies a mission of healing and hope, with a campaign to bind up social wounds that have deepened in the Trump era. The other path, Ms. Warren’s, promises combat and more combat — a crusade not just to defeat Mr. Trump but to demolish the architecture of his government.

As much as any disputation over policy, this gulf defines the Democratic presidential field, separating candidates of disparate backgrounds and ideologies into two loose groups: fighters and healers.
This will confuse Jeff_36, no doubt. Placing Sherrod Brown in the divisive, fighter camp, as Burns does, sure as hell confuses me. Burns also places Harris, profiled as overly careful and too accommodating elsewhere in the Times, as a divisive fighter.

Biden, Bloomberg, and O'Rourke are viewed as healers, along with Booker. Although Burns sees the healers in non-ideological terms, he describes Booker as emphasizing fiscal prudence and downplaying populist anti-corporate pitches. Burns ignores that Biden, Bloomberg, and O'Rourke are all from the less progressive part of the party.

Curiously, conveniently forgetting Sanders and Brown for a moment, Burns sees a gender divide - macho men confident enough in their masculinity to call for healing and project optimism as against Warren and crew uncertain how to convey "tenderness or vulnerability without fear of appearing weak" (Warren is caricatured as trying to look "like a boxer soaking in applause"). It isn't clear how familiar this writer is with Gillibrand, Klobuchar, or Harris, to rely on such a bizarre division.

I nearly gave up my subscription to the Times after today's early morning reading. OTOH perhaps as the primary season unfolds better commentary will be forthcoming too.

I nearly lost a front wheel to a pothole the size of Wyoming last evening, so again I ask, when is infrastructure week?

I'll be going to Sweden this spring for over a month and will be pleased to drive on roads that lack craters. I am told that the problem where I live is harsh winters, unlike, er, Sweden or Germany?

Voters' intuition that something is wrong with a country whose bridges, airports, highways, public transport, tunnels, water supply, and so on are dated, dilapidated, and sometimes even dangerous isn't foolish.
They're not lying. There are a decent amount of potholes near where I live and the harsh weather is the cause for it. Most of them get patched up fairly quickly but some areas are badly neglected on account of low traffic. Montreal is even worse - mafia construction cartels are to blame - thank God I don't live there lol. Remember that North America is a lot more automobile intensive than Northwestern Europe, so there is a lot less road to be fixing over there.

I just got home, kind of late for a weekday evening, and looked at Aftonbladet, a scurrilous, gossipy Swedish tabloid. The top headline reads,
JUST NU: Överens – precis före Trumps tal
▸ Beskedet: Ingen ny shutdown
The story has a link to follow "Donald Trumps mur mot Mexiko."

All that translates something like this (my Swedish sucks): "Just now: Agreed - right before Trump's speech. The message: no new shutdown." And: "Donald Trump's wall against Mexico."

According to Aftonbladet [The Evening Paper], the congressional agreement is tonight's biggest story. In "socialist" Sweden, too.

Here it is lack of maintenance and substandard materials, usually bought in sweetheart deals from insiders. Swedes I know in the US complain that as social democratic protections erode back home, Sweden's roads and bridges are not being kept up to standard, but they will acknowledge that infrastructure here is far worse off.

Funny thing: as investment and maintenance are reduced, infrastructure worsens, with the same climatic and traffic conditions. Go figure.

Not investing in and caring for infrastructure will eventually have an impact here, there, and everywhere. It isn't just harsh winters and lots of traffic where I live, in part demonstrated by the fact that our roads suck well outside heavily traveled urban areas, too.

Today's news from (heavily traveled) Lakeshore Drive: https://abc7chicago.com/traffic/nb-lake ... r/5132683/ ("But some said it's a band-aid over the larger problem of severe underfunding of infrastructure by the state. 'The roads and bridges even where you can't see it, they're failing, and it's because there hasn't been a public commitment to financing the repair of these roads,' said Ed Maher, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150.")

And here: https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/loc ... story.html ("Sriraj also said Illinois only has dedicated $2.6 billion to bridge improvement over six years, when the need is $10 billion. The national need is $2 trillion, he said.")

Trump tonight on the congressional deal that is said to give him less for his {!#%@} wall than he would have gotten in January: “Just so you know, we’re building the wall anyway.”

JEFF'S DEMOCRATIC PARTY SWEEPSTAKES: EPISODE IV - The "OH YEAH YOU BETCHA" EDITION

Amy Klouchbar's campaign kick-off was absolutely epic - the stuff of Viking mystique. Gotta love a good snowstorm every now and then - the kind that gets you the day off work, not the kind that sends you into a ditch, only to get yanked out by a friendly hoosier in an F 150 not three minutes later - which definitely did not happen to me two years ago....... 8-)

Assuming her husband's wood duck collection is in good order, and the good Lord is willing, I see no reason why the lady can't feed Trump through a wood-chipper come 2020. She might even substitute bumper stickers for three cent stamps too, I mean geeze, a lotta people yousse them anyway right?

I mean sure, there have been rumors about her abusing staff, but, come on,it's not like she ever killed someone with an axe or shot a state trooper or anything like that tho amIright?

.......................................................................................................................................................................................

Ok, seriously, have any of you seen Fargo? THE ENTIRE ITALICIZED SECTION IS NOTHING BUT A SERIES OF PURILE FARGO REFERENCES -
I MADE THIS WHOLE DUMB JOKE JUST BECAUSE SHE'S FROM MINNISOTA!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I'M SO FUNNY! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

......................................................................................................................................................................................

Ok, in all seriousness, I think Klouchbar is a great candidate on paper, but there are a few holes that will be her undoing. She should be my favorite, considering that Minnesota is basically "Canada-south", or so I'm told - Seriously, when I was in FLA, some dude behind the counter at a 7-Eleven asked me if I was from MIN, because apparently I sound like I'm from there for whatever reason. I don't think I sound like that, and none of my frinds say I have any accent or affectation at all, but this guy.... he did. IDK - eye of the beholder.

Anyway, the story with Klouchbar is far more complicated than that.

Up until today, I have only covered candidates who are purely absurd (Warren), vile (Gabbard), forgettable (HUD-guy), or loony (Booker). From here on out, I'll try to divide these posts into sections on positives and negatives. I will eventually get on to Harris, but that one will have to be rather lengthily.

THE GOOD

Klouchbar can position herself as a favorable contrast to her primary opponents, playing those who have expressed an almost Leninist desire to bring the system crashing down (Warren, Gabbard) against those who espouse Clinton-lite economic policies (Bloomberg) and those who mix revolutionary rhetoric with Clinton-esque economics (Booker). This will succeed - up to a point (more later), because it will allow her to come up the middle and position herself as a kind of consensus candidate in which every faction can find something to like.

In a general contest, Klouchbar would be a nightmare opponent for Trump and would stand a very good chance of sweeping the Blue Wall states on account of her midwestern roots, and what logically should be a well established ground game in the region - something that was a negative difference maker for HRC in `16.

She would do very well in a debate - her performance in the Kavanaugh hearing was masterful and Kavanaugh was a far tougher opponent than Trump ever would be.

Finally, in a contest where Trump would seek to paint the Democrats as a party of aristocratic elites, foreign financial interests, and urban felons (is that dog whistling? Damn right - and you had better believe these goons will be going full Atwater to save the furniture, it's vile but they'll do it because that's what they do), a candidate like Klouchabar would render these sordid tactics useless. Deprive him of his weapons and he loses the war.

THE BAD

She will have a very hard time attaining support from the professional policy/political class. Why? Because she's an absolute horse-killer to work for and reputations like that can spread fast in political bubbles like DC and can do huge damage to someone's reputation. I know this from personal experience. She will have no shortage of volunteers, but the senior and middle ranking staff that run these types of campaigns - policy advisers, communications directors, issues managers, press secretaries, advance men, ect. ect - are almost all current /former Senate and Hill staff who have no doubt heard horror stories on patios after work or in cafeterias during shift about how much of a bully she is. As a result, she will have to suffice with barrel-scrapings and misfit toys to run her machine, and that makes a huge difference when it comes to implementation.

It's very technical, but ultimately I feel that this is the reason why she won't won or even come close in the primary. If you can't find the right people to make up your team, your effort will fall short when it comes down to the finish. Small differences make a substantial impact and this will absolutely kill her chances out of the gate. Plus, her campaign will no doubt have a high turnover of staff, and this will also limit effectiveness in execution.

Additionally, her efforts to paint herself as the unifying candidate will come to a screeching halt when Biden enters the race. He will use the exact same game plan - less racial/identity politics, more social/economic outreach to Midwestern voters - but will have ten times the name recognition and thirty times the reputation. Biden will also be able to outspend her and outhire her, and he essentially can have his pick of who he wants to run and staff his campaign - Klouchbar will be forced to go looking for staff at motels, and parking garages.

There are no particular reasons why her policy will fail to attain support, her issue will come from a crowded center-right side of the field, and organizational flaws that will arise from staffing deficits.

At this point in the winter, all the streets in Burlington have become CARnivorous. We've got potholes that work like the Denver Boot. Let your attention wander for a second, and you lose the front end of your car. And 25cm of snow expected over the next 24 hours, just when the piles from the last big one were shrinking to a point that I could actually see the walls of my house all the way to the ground.
