He was making $2,100/mo. and debt of $130K? Factoring in basic weed/booze expenses and debt service, a clear pic starts to emerge of another angry white dope who wants to make his own stupidity someone else's fault.... Darwin Award.

Ooh, listening to The Last Word, and it seems AMI's action might not fall under extortion (no demand of property, I guess they mean physical property and what happens remains to be seen) but some guy mentioned a rumor(?) that they might have gotten the electronic communication(s) not through a hack but possibly a "government entity" (at around 9:30ish).

Josh Marshall, earlier last night:
1) Criminal or other investigations, plural. Bezos' post "strongly suggests that there are already criminal investigations underway into what happened here. Those could be in one of the jurisdictions where potential bad acts occurred (Los Angeles or Seattle, perhaps). It could be in New York since AMI is already tangled up with the the Trump Organization/Michael Cohen investigation. It could be state or federal. We don’t know. It is also possible there are congressional investigations and even conceivably counter-intelligence investigations . . ."
2) Enquirer and Saudi Arabia. "We know President Trump has a relationship with the Enquirer. Much less known is the relationship with the Saudi government. Bezos goes out of his way to suggest that what happened here may be tied to Saudi Arabia and specifically the controversy over the murder of Jamal Khashoggi."
3) Hacking. "Big picture though, Bezos and his investigators think Saudi Arabia plays a key role here. That’s big for numerous reasons, not least of which is that states can carry out state-level hacking enterprises."
4) Criminality or not. "[K]nowledgable ex-prosecutors seem to think this effort would not be prosecutable as extortion or blackmail, even though it meets the colloquial definition. But Bezos here suggests they’ve got multiple examples of a pattern of conduct. These people probably aren’t willing to go public as Bezos has. But that’s a big cudgel in Bezos’ hands"

I don't know the law but this piece in the Amazon-Bezos WaPo is chilling: "Ronan Farrow says he also faced ‘blackmail efforts from AMI’ for reporting on the National Enquirer, Trump"

It almost seems like AMI feels rather safe under some kind of wing. Maybe a flabby, doughy one? And Bezos' action is considered and described as courageous (well, besides major damage already having been done, he also has quite a safety cushion others don't have) in the news with lines like bravely "exposing himself" and "putting it all out there".

I bet he won't be safe from Colbert and friends. :-P

Yes, and the ever-reliable Carter Page . . . the initial thought was that he somehow got the messages and gave them to AMI but Bezos' investigators point, I think, to a foreign government.

For me one very odd aspect of this is how expected it is: it's merely quintessentially Trumpy.

Along with at least one prominent right-wing commentator (Laura Ingraham), WaPo was impressed with Stacey Abrams' reply to Trump's campaign speech from Congress. In fact, WaPo found the performance strong enough to add Abrams to their ranking of Democratic presidential hopefuls, on which she now is listed 15th:

Position Challenger Change Over Last Ranking
1. Kamala D. Harris —
2. Amy Klobuchar UP 5
3. Joe Biden DOWN 1
4. Sherrod Brown —
5. Cory Booker UP 3
6. Elizabeth Warren DOWN 3
7. Beto O’Rourke DOWN 2
8. Bernie Sanders DOWN 2
9. Kirsten Gillibrand —
10. Michael Bloomberg —
11. Howard Schultz —
12. John Hickenlooper —
13. Oprah Winfrey UP 2
14. Julián Castro DOWN 1
15. Stacey Abrams ADDS TO RANKING

I hope WaPo is kidding about Klobuchar. Lord knows what moved Oprah Winfrey up two spots. Howard Schultz shouldn't be listed as he has said his plan is not to run as a Democrat. Pete Buttigieg dropped off. And Nikki Haley (!?!?!) garnered some support.

Apart from this list being kind of nutty in some respects, I am favorably inclined toward 2 of the top 4, which is an unusual position for me. I like Abrams, but I also don't see why she's on this list. Other than that, I don't see strong possibilities when the field is listed out like this.

Also, Donald Trump is a clownfraud who only got involved in this for the attention.

Well........Candace Owens is completely correct on the issue of Nationalism. It should apply only internally to one country and not be exported to others. Supporting Nationalism as distinct from Wars of Aggression doesn't go into any specific policy.

Any link/clues regarding her opinion on any policy anywhere on racial discrimination or genocide? I don't care enough to look....should be in your hip pocket?

Ah.........what the heck. Google is cheap. Candace Owen: OH.......shes the Abortion is Black Genocide person? She'd probably be against Hitler then?

Yeah.....as everything is, its a mix of different issues. Impossible for hooman beings to discuss.

My position: abortion should be legal, safe, and used as often as possible as desired by the free choice OF THE PARENTS. Simple to state. gubment getting out of the way of individual choice is the conservative position. violated when their personal values go the other way. As per: usual.

Candace Owens

@RealCandaceO

You spelled murder wrong.
Planned Parenthood

@PPFA

Abortion is health care. Full stop. http://p.ppfa.org/2I9teb3

Might be hard to follow on a first quick view but Owens is rather clever/funny until you realize she is serious. Abortion is Healthcare and Owens quips that Murder is mispelled ===>as in spelling it Healthcare. I get it. A technique that can be applied everywhere. As in the response: You spelled Religious Indoctrination wrong.

The desire to control other people having no impact on your own life runs deep. Starts with God.........goes all the way down.

Seems like she wanted to show people that she knows next to nothing about Nazi ultra-nationalism, German history or even the domestic agenda of Nazism. Not to mention what globalism refers to. She succeeded in making an ass of herself and her movement. I read where the Turning Point USA tour in the UK has people shaking their heads in astonishment.

The Washington Post is now reporting on a whole village of people in Costa Rica who say they worked illegally at Trump's golf courses, and presented pay stubs and other documentation to prove it. That's gotta hurt his brand a little bit.

And the dictionary definition of trumpery seems to be going viral right now. Snopes even checked it out.
“It is certainly sad and regrettable that so many innocent people died…Stalin was absolutely adamant on making doubly sure: spare no one…I don’t deny that I supported that view. I was simply not able to study every individual case…It was hard to draw a precise line where to stop.”

another take on Nadler's failures with Whitaker yesterday (WaPo had a very different perspective, to be fair): "Matthew Whitaker Turned His House Judiciary Committee Hearing Into a Joke and Democrats Let Him":

- "The clear implication was that a subpoena was still on the table if Whitaker dodged. In actuality, Collins said, the chairman had sent a second letter to the Department of Justice guaranteeing that there would be no subpoena." (and Whitaker dodged, sullenly stonewalled, flippantly joked, and figuratively gave Nadler the finger; note that the committee's ranking Republican was already during the hearing gloating about Nadler's "full-blown cave" to Whitaker)
- "Without a legitimate subpoena threat—and with so little time left for the acting attorney general in office—Whitaker felt comfortable literally laughing off Democrats’ questions."
- "Democrats were mocked not only by Whitaker but by their colleagues on the other side of the aisle," including about Slalwell's all-too-obvious political aspirations
- "Nadler said during the hearing that he was requesting Whitaker reappear before the committee for a sworn deposition to respond further to unanswered questions and for the White House to be forced to go on the record claiming executive privilege. Barring a change in the subpoena position, it’s unclear that will actually happen. And after Friday, it’s also unclear what the point might be."

Despite presidential rhetoric and shadow boxing, the conduct of the House committees so far has aptly illustrated Jeffk's point about Democratic weakness in process; Trump is for real treating all this as a war - the Democrats, not so much. Maybe Schiff will correct the imbalance?

Thanks, that makes sense, parallel to some of Manafort's recent entanglements where a preponderance of evidence prevails in the subsequent hearings about the plea violation, I think.
