Mnuchin: because of Trump's policies, the US won't be "going back to socialism."

When was that, again?
He could be referring to the New Deal, although I wouldn't classify it as socialisim by any stretch.
Doubtful. For one thing, I am not sure this crowd has heard of the New Deal. Bloomberg guessed that the Trumpistas are going after Ocasio-Cortez.

More importantly, Mnuchin's statement was made as part of Trump's re-election messaging, aligned with Trump's campaign speech, er, State of the Union address in which the theme of the Socialist Danger was featured ("Here, in the United States, we are alarmed by new calls to adopt socialism in our country. America was founded on liberty and independence — not government coercion, domination, and control"). This is a calculated effort to play on fear by branding the Democratic party as a whole as reflecting Ocasio-Cortez's politics and using "the Wall" to create crime panic. (The staid NY Times noted about all this that "there is no evidence of any growing public angst about socialism sweeping the United States.")

Equating regulation to socialism, Mnuchin said, "We're not going back to socialism. . . . We don't believe in a centralized planned economy where the government puts restraints on it." Mnuchin specifically promoted more tax cuts and referred to legislation proposed by Democrats to limit corporate share buy-backs.

I think the subliminal appeal here is that tuition-fee college, single payer, and progressive taxes are gateway drugs to the Gulag, Maoism, and Venezuelan carnage.

Breitbart is on board, overnight responding to Trump's speech with T-shirts they're hawking, "#NEVER SOCIALIST USA," and quoting Trump in the pitch, "'We are born free, and we will stay free.' President Donald J. Trump, SOTU 2019"; this sounds like the Sweden Democrats' slogan in last year's elections in Sweden.

David Corn, among many others, responded: “‘Not going back’? So does he propose to abolish Social Security, Medicare, federal flood insurance, food stamps, school lunches, corporate welfare subsidies, and other elements of socialism that have long been part of the American tradition?”

Virginia Democrats update, doing what they can to help the GOP bounce back in the state and get Trump re-elected in 2020 . . . 1. Gov Northam black face, 2. Lt Gov Fairfax credibly accused of sexual assault, 3. AG Herring black face

I nearly lost a front wheel to a pothole the size of Wyoming last evening, so again I ask, when is infrastructure week?

I'll be going to Sweden this spring for over a month and will be pleased to drive on roads that lack craters. I am told that the problem where I live is harsh winters, unlike, er, Sweden or Germany?

Voters' intuition that something is wrong with a country whose bridges, airports, highways, public transport, tunnels, water supply, and so on are dated, dilapidated, and sometimes even dangerous isn't foolish.

If they were Republicans, they'd tearfully whinge a bit and move on as if nothing had happened...

It is quite noticeable that the witch hunt unleashed by the bloodthirsty partisan hacks in the "Democrat" party have yet to use their House chairmanships to request Individual-1's tax returns. I worry about those Democrats, truth be told.
Wouldn't a request depend on the matter investigated and the completeness of the respective oversight committee(s)? Last I heard, Schiff's group just now got started with stalling Reptilians taking their sweet time announcing the same characters participating as in the last round.

If Nunes is playing, ya think he'll wear a live wire for quick and easy transfer?
update: https://talkingpointsmemo.com/muckraker ... ax-returns
But it does appear that the committee investigating Russian interference will now be turning over to Mueller those documents the Republicans thought they could keep sealed. Elections DO have consequences. Trump will go apoplectic over this. As for the tax returns, that's a long way down the road, and Trump's tame SCOTUS may well side with him. I doubt that any facts or laws will be relevant to the SCOTUS decision; this institution has lost 90% of whatever credibility it had.

Meanwhile, some way has GOT to be found to terminate Elizabeth Warren's campaign. She has less voter appeal than Hillary Clinton had, even though I like her policies much better.
“It is certainly sad and regrettable that so many innocent people died…Stalin was absolutely adamant on making doubly sure: spare no one…I don’t deny that I supported that view. I was simply not able to study every individual case…It was hard to draw a precise line where to stop.”

No facts or law huh? Fairy Dust then? The Supremes by majority are "conservative" which is much closer to Republican than it is to Trump who is actually free range delusional and not party affiliated. They supported Obama Care in a decision that 6 years later became the predicate for overturn of most of it. Interesting how that played out.

I really like Warren too. Interesting she is being taken down with the same over reaction to something else (ie, something other than Indian Heritage which: who cares either way?) I find mostly irrelevant: the BlackFace brouhaha. As stated previously, yeah/ok: but what has their/her performance in office been?

With our pile on clown show of a Media, doesn't look like Warren will be able to overcome the same silliness she used as an edge years ago. Ha, ha....some poetic justice there I suppose..........or poetic petardness?

I'm not versed in the process but Neal's critics say that his delaying is playing into Trump's hands and his reasoning is helping to create Trump's case when he goes to court, if Neal ever does request the returns. Little Adam Shitt is another story, IMO a happier story.

My half cent, said as someone who supported the effort to get Warren to run in 2016: The primaries are to sort things and candidates out. The Democrats need her perspective. Her family heritage controversy is a tempest in a teapot (I was raised believing that my mother's side of the family was Irish - they are not . . . ). That said, I don't think Warren is the right candidate this time around or a strong candidate in general.

In fact, I think that many among the Democrats whose positions on policies are closest to mine are gravely misreading the electorate and context for 2020. Trump can win again, because the electorate has a very large retrograde element as well as a bloc that is generally conservative. American voters are not really progressive or even very sophisticated. It's a mistake to believe that the Democrats can peel off many Trump loyalists (below) but, to win, they have to pull a lot of votes from conservative to conservative-center folks. I think. Again, we see what happens in the primaries. But my feeling is that this is the wrong election for a "bold progressive" agenda. 2020 is likely the "unite against Trumpery" election, aka the old popular front concept.

Sherrod Brown: I dunno. I've seen a half dozen recent TV interviews he's done. He doesn't come off as vital - and he is IMO going way overboard on the "white working class" / Trumpian pitch. Erin Burnett of all people really made him squirm on this. But in his interviews Brown seems lacking. I am more and more in wait and see mode.

I haven't seen anyone recommend that. What is said is that the Trump Base Supporters would never vote for ANY dumbocrat which is fueling young buck Repukes to challenge Trump.........and for the primary voters to split their votes thereby or to not vote at all. Conventional Wisdom...I think.

I disagree. The opposite of Trump which is what the majority electorate should pendant swing for this cycle is a bold progressive. Medicare for All, out every Republican that has had an abortion, and join Western Civilization.

HA!!!!! Nice promo for hbo's VEEP. The prompter fails so she says: "There are literally no words for me to express....." //// A good phrase for anyone on telepromter to remember. Trump always "looks like" he is reading a prompter..... more than most of the rest. I assume its a tell he doesn't agree with being "managed" to be coherent? It lacks his personal touch.

Trump, who is like a very smart person with all the best words, today at something called the National Prayer Breakfast:
America's potential is unlimited because our extraordinary people are just something that is number one, no matter where you go. We have people, they love our country and they love their faith. We are graced by those extraordinary heroes. . . . Together, we will end the scourge of modern day slavery, that because of the internet, is at levels nobody can believe. The internet came along and some good things happened, but some very bad things happened and this is one of them.
I can think of one of those very bad things that happened.

Ironically if both governor and Lt. governor resign the position goes to a Republican.

I’d take that right now. Resign, spend the next few years rebuilding. I’ll take the short term pain.

Meanwhile the second coming of Bobby Kennedy reveals himself to be a self-indulgent a-hole, nearly solipsistic in his egoism. And Minnesota nice can't find a campaign chief because she so notoriously abuses staff.

I've been plodding, slowly, through Tomasevich and working on some other projects. I discovered a very interesting Swedish photographer, Lars Tunbjörk.

Meanwhile, some way has GOT to be found to terminate Elizabeth Warren's campaign. She has less voter appeal than Hillary Clinton had, even though I like her policies much better.

That's about where I am. We've got a year to sort this all out and cobble together a coherent Democratic platform for 2020. Just writing those words makes me nostalgic for the days when I was a naive youngster who conscientiously read the platforms of the political parties (because my Weekly Reader held them up for me as important documents). And here I am, 76 years old, hoping that the old-fashioned platform actually might mean something again. I know that hope won't survive the first assault of attack ads libeling the character of the Democratic candidate.)

But if I understand the Warren situation, she attempted to gain special consideration by claiming an Indian heritage that she had never lived. That's a bit more serious than, say, Hillary Clinton's "discovery" of a Jewish ancestor when she ran for the Senate seat in New York. There is no chance that she will resign, so there's little point in calling for it. But both she and Northam could get much better "teaching moments" out of their peccadilloes by resigning. Nothing would make a stronger statement that this exploitation of an ethnic group is not acceptable. Conversely, no assurances of their true convictions will ever be quite convincing as long as they cling to office. I hate to say this, because Warren has said more good things than anybody else in Washington over the past year.

Shelley Moore Capito has told Bloomberg that the conference committee negotiations over a border barrier are “down to how much and where.”

News flash, he probably hasn’t been exercising or following his diet very closely.

No thank you, Mr Pecker. (I do not think that "expediate" is a proper word.)

The HuffPo headline on the above, an apparent sextortion attempt by sleaze merchants at National Enquirer against Bezos, is "Bezos exposes Pecker." But the issues are quite serious.

I take that a lot of this relates to Trump's re-election campaign, as well as to pet projects of the administration like Kashoggi's murder and Trump's media enemies list.

What diet? He got enough meatloaf and mash stored in that hump to get most folk through a 20 year sentence...

The SDNY will not be happy with Mr Pecker if Bezos' charges pan out.

Josh Marshall noted an important data point for the progressive health-care agenda: many progressives have been touting some polling (two-thirds supporting Medicare for All) to convince themselves that the numbers are on their side. Marshall reminds these activists that when pollsters for one poll informed people that Medicare for All means "eliminat[ion of] private health insurance companies," the same companies that people detest, support for Medicare for All dropped to just over a third. (I think that, in fact, some other polls have shown even less support for Medicare for All when this follow up question is asked.)

Like me, Marshall supports single payer. But also like me he is concerned about the politics of this in the present context.
