Stacey Abrams.
Meh. Should have been Sherrod Brown in all seriousness.
Doesn’t really matter to me. I’m trying to keep my stomach from heaving.

Pence is a sphinx, as always. I will never understand that guy. A latter day Carlist Requete. What surreal times we live in.

Herman probably stuffed some led into a few abhorrent KL guards - good on him. It's a shame that Trump has to be the one that prattles on about him though.

Nice point, Dan/OOB! Here's the box score on SOTU.

The NYT counts 8 false statements, 4 exaggerated claims, 10 misleading statements, 2 claims for which "there is no evidence" and 1 that is "not yet determined."

But that last one is the most serious of all. He brought the family of a murder victim for show-and-tell and proclaimed the man who has been arrested for the murder to be guilty. That pretty much guarantees that if the man is convicted, his appeal will succeed. (Nixon did this during the trial of Charles Manson, and nearly led to a mistrial. But this was when the trial was already in progress and the jury was sequestered. The jury would not have heard about it, except that the defense attorney read Nixon's statement into the court record. Given that the communication came from the defense attorney and not directly from the President, the trial was allowed to proceed.)

And, I might add, the claim of a specific number of people who "got off food stamps," even if he had the number right (he didn't), is true partly due to draconian cuts in this program. People didn't "get off" of food stamps. They were KICKED off.

This is news to me, and I don't like the sound of it. My wife and I give 20% of our income to charity. I was depending on that deduction, at least, to remain the same. If it doesn't, I'm screwed. True, the new standard deduction will replace a good portion of this, but I figure I'm going to have to pay taxes on at least $3,000 of income that would previously have been deductible. I suppose it won't bankrupt me, but it makes me mad as hell that billionaires are getting tax breaks equal to ten years of my total income, and I have to pay more.

Think of it this way, Upton: as an average American in Trump's plutocracy, you are a charitable donation for the wealthy and the super-wealthy.

I have just 3 questions about the speech:

Was this when he finally became presidential?

Did he say when it will be infrastructure week again?

Did Kellyanne promise that Trump would call for "comity" or "comedy"?

And one comment: This threat - "If there is going to be peace and legislation, there cannot be war and investigation" - is unadulterated BS on a number of levels. To take 4 -

First, there can be investigations and law making, it is up to Trump.

Second, try as he might to pretend that it is just Democrats going after their political nemesis, he cannot change the facts that his presidency and close associates have been under investigation by justice officials and many of his associates found guilty in legal proceedings or pleas.

Third, if the investigations keep finding more wrongdoing, and some of those investigations are launched by Congress, then Congress is actually and finally doing its work, not waging war.

Fourth, investigations or no investigations, Bloatus has proven incapable of getting things accomplished - and the threat is a weak attempt to deflect from his poor negotiating skills, unreliability, mood swings, and actions (he acts like president of 35% of the country or leader of a right-wing movement). Trump's been part of the problem, and investigations, which Congress has been shy about launching, have nothing to do with his poor performance (or that of the Republican caucus).

Two majorly, bigly, meaningless tossoffs in SOTU: (1) We need to do something about infrastructure; (2) Americans are paying too much for their medicine. Like Merkel's remark that Brexit requires "creative thought."

Not all that helpful, folks!

It is quite noticeable that the witch hunt unleashed by the bloodthirsty partisan hacks in the "Democrat" party have yet to use their House chairmanships to request Individual-1's tax returns. I worry about those Democrats, truth be told.
Wouldn't a request depend on the matter investigated and the completeness of the respective oversight committee(s)? Last I heard, Schiff's group just now got started with stalling Reptilians taking their sweet time announcing the same characters participating as in the last round.

If Nunes is playing, ya think he'll wear a live wire for quick and easy transfer?

He also said that the United States will never become a socialist country, which is as ambiguous a statement as there is because no two people will define a socialist country the same way. All governments are a blend of private and public enterprise, and where the line is between socialism and non-socialism is anyone's call.

Canada has a corporate postal system and a public health insurance system, whereas the US is the opposite. Which one is the socialist country? Neither? Both?
The job of a skeptic is to investigate the unexplained; not to explain the uninvestigated.

I say push the infrastructure and prescription drug pricing. Let’s face it, Trump talks a big game. Force the issue, come up with legislation and send it off to the Senate. When it falls apart or Trump refuses to sign it call him out for the hypocrite he is.

I say push the infrastructure and prescription drug pricing. Let’s face it, Trump talks a big game. Force the issue, come up with legislation and send it off to the Senate. When it falls apart or Trump refuses to sign it call him out for the hypocrite he is.
I read through material on his speech. I was very impressed with the climate change section. :)
That and the part about gov't. workers getting their back pay were quite compelling......

Most of them were elected in districts that voted for Trump in the last general. They need to tread a fine line in public.

.......or they haven't been watching the news in the past three years.

Mnuchin: because of Trump's policies, the US won't be "going back to socialism."

When was that, again?
He could be referring to the New Deal, although I wouldn't classify it as socialisim by any stretch.
