It is hard to go see films like Downfall if you have somewhat straight girlfriend. The film was showing at an arthouse cinema in Sydney. I asked Amanda if she wanted to go see it. I said it was a "war film". When we arrived the audience was all very serious elderly people. It wasn't a barrel of laughs like going to see "Kelly's heroes"
:D

I tried to get Amanda to watch "Denial" on cable.. That also went down like a ton of bricks. :D
I found "Denial" a bore, although well acted...

I haven’t watched it, not sure I’m going to. Not really my thing but Evan’s book on it was good.

Ganz portrayal was probably the best Hitler there has been. Likely because the film is Deutsche it might explain why it can seem a bit boring. Bruno's Downfall legacy must also includes those hundreds of crazy Internet youtube pencil-snapping voice over parodies.

Downfall also captured the horrible claustrophobia of the bunker very well and the insanity of it all. Plus the scene with Stumpfegger and the Goebbels children was extremely well done and chilling. Shocked to discover how old the film is now. The DVD extras are interesting as well.

“Soap” was one of the funniest shows on TV. My parents never let me watch it, I had to wait until I grew up and moved out of the house. Comedy Central used to play back to back from noon until one. I taped it and watched it in between classes. RIP, Katherine Helmond.

I never heard of the "other 90s" guy but Firestarter was a damned fine tune. I once got the song stuck in my head and was only able to come up with its name and who did it after about three days of sheer agony . . .

:D

I was forced to watch “Melrose” a few times. The same way I had to watch “Beaches” or “Fried Green Tomatoes.”

SM, those were standard romance movies that girls made guys watch to see if they were truly interested.

I got stuck with Top Gun...but I just thought that it was an awful film and she had no taste - not at all that she had marriage lines designs upon me.

No, I wasn't actually. I'd been married for 15 years by the mid-90s.

Uh-oh, I don't know what Melrose is! Or the other ones. My favorite movie during the '90s was Mystery Train, other ones were probably My Twentieth Century (which may have been released in the '80s come to think of it!), May Fools, and After Dark My Sweet.

My wife liked Godard, Truffaut, Malle, and Rohmer. We pretty much agreed, though I was also partial to Resnais and Chaplin - and didn't care so much for Malle except as above.

Never knew he was that sick. But you are right, it’s enough to piss anyone off that Dick Dale (or anyone) has to go through that to stay alive.

When I saw Dick Dale, he did not allude to his illness. He played with abandon and came across as energetic to the point of being a bit wild. In retrospect, I have no idea how he was able to do so. He did bring on stage one of his high school teachers from Quincy, who, in her 80s at the time, was flustered and funny and gobsmacked by it all. Dick Dale shouldn't have to do all that just to stay alive - and there are so many people without the options, such as they were, that Dale had. Depressing as hell.
