* Christopher Dillon, Dachau & the SS: A Schooling in Violence - this is a study of the SS at Dachau, the Dachau model, and the ideology and group dynamics among the Deaths Head units, fits very nicely with Theweleit's still-groundbreaking but more general Male Fantasies, Theweleit's 2 volumes being among the best things I've read on our painful topic
I’m also looking at this at some point.
Would probably recommend "Dachau, 1933-1945: The official history" (1975) by Paul Berben as supplementary reading.
Thanks, it’s funny, that’s the one I tried to track down last night.
Question for Groening by a reporter:
“Mr. Groening, what do you say to those who still deny the Holocaust?”

Groening:
“Nothing. They are hopelessly lost.”

Found out my mother is going to Israel next March and is stopping at Yad Vashem.

She told me she would stop by the bookstore for me...shouldn’t have made that offer!!

Actually. Since Yad Vashem was mentioned I think I forgot to make you a PDF of the article by Kranz SM.

I also forgot to order a few more editions.

On their way from Jeff Bezos to me: . . .

* Wolf Gruner, German Reich, 1933 – 1937 [document collection, VEJ1] . . .
About a year later, this tome arrived today. It is almost 900 pages of documents on Jewish policies and actions of the Third Reich, 1933-1937.

Here’s the thing, this is volume 1 of a 16 volume series. A list (from the dust jacket) of the future volumes planned:

The last of the German volumes should be published by 2020 or so. I don't know the timetable for translation and English publication. I've also heard that a series documents from the Ringelblum Archive is to be published in more than 30 volumes.

I have a book called Shatterzone of Empires: Coexistence and Violence in the German, Habsburg, Russian, and Ottoman Borderlands, edited by Omar Bartov, coming in a day or two. It's over 500 pp of papers on ethnic and national conflict in the region from the late 1900s through WWII. Between that big book and the German documents collection, I pretty know what I will be reading for a while.

Alright, got the above. I also purchased a Kindle edition of Christopher Browning’s “Ordinary Men,” the recent revised edition. That used up my budget for Father’s Day.
:D

I am almost done with my re-read of Eyewitness to Genocide and will continue the thread I started on it. After that...who knows?
I think I will dive into Reitlinger.

Reitlinger’s book is...strange.

OTOH he doesn’t like the word “genocide:”
Page 8 footnote “I have purposely avoided the term “Genocide” which was coined at the IMT....I consider that this hybrid....is no asset to the English language as it says nothing which cannot be conveyed in plain speech.”

The book is £36.28, so I’m wondering if anyone has read it or not before buying it. It’s a Central European Series book and 458 pages.

Looks like Purdue U Press. Collection of papers edited by Charles Ingrao and Frank Szabo. From medieval period to post WWII. I don't know the book or this Ingrao, only Christian Ingrao. How come there are two C Ingraos working in this field? This is a question for k0nsl; I think it proves something about hoaxsterism. It doesn't smell right to me. I believe that the Ingraos did not take place.

Question for Groening by a reporter:
“Mr. Groening, what do you say to those who still deny the Holocaust?”

Groening:
“Nothing. They are hopelessly lost.”

For those who can understand German, Götz Aly has published:

»Endlösung«: Völkerverschiebung und der Mord an den europäischen Juden

Die restlose Erfassung: Volkszählen, Identifizieren, Aussondern im Nationalsozialismus

Volk ohne Mitte: Die Deutschen zwischen Freiheitsangst und Kollektivismus

Hitlers Volksstaat: Raub, Rassenkrieg und nationaler Sozialismus

I’m actually enjoying Reitlinger more than I thought. It’s dated but he is a good writer and it’s well sourced.
Should I buy the book? It's £15.45 on Amazon.

I say it’s worth it. Amazon found me a cheap version.

Have you read David Cesarani's "Final Solution: The Fate of the Jews 1933-1949"? If so, how different are you finding Reitlinger's book?

In English - that I know about it, following Goody's sequence:

'Final Solution': Nazi Population Policy and the Murder of the European Jews
The Nazi Census: identification and control in the Third Reich
-- (I don't think this one's been translated)
Hitler's Beneficiaries: Plunder, Racial War, and the Nazi Welfare State

also:
Why the Germans? Why the Jews? Envy, Race Hatred, and the Prehistory of the Holocaust
Architects of Annihilation: Auschwitz and the logic of destruction, with Suzanne Heim (a must-read along with "Final Solution" IMO)
Cleansing the Fatherland: Nazi medicine and racial hygiene, with Chroust and Pross
Into the Tunnel
. . . all right we are two nations . . .

Yes, I read it some time ago.

Reitlinger spends a chapter on pre-WWII, about 28 pages. Cesarani’s book is much more extensive than that. Naturally Cesarani is updated information while Reitlinger wrote his book just a few years after the war.

Also, it’s hard to describe but there is a “tone” to the book. Reitlinger lived through that so his perceptions are colored by what happened during the war. It’s similar to Shirer’s “tone” in the “Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.” There is a bias that’s there. It’s something I’m not used to.

Probably the best thing to do is read it for yourself and see if you notice it.

Here’s a really blatant example:
Page 42:
Himmler’s victims, the Slav nations, continued after the war the work Himmler had began and today nine million displaced Germans live in the Federal West German Republic, unwanted, under-privileged, and almost foreigners, the germ-bearers of the vindictive German militarism in the future.

That stuck out like a sore thumb. Reitlinger singles out Hitler as having a more active role than what we know now. Also he elevates Heydrich over Himmler as a real driving force in the Holocaust.

It’s things like that. They stick out over other authors.

But it’s still worth a read.

I bought the book earlier. Thanks for the heads-up about his writing style.
