Ditto. I'm putting the Moorhouse book high on my list.
“It is certainly sad and regrettable that so many innocent people died…Stalin was absolutely adamant on making doubly sure: spare no one…I don’t deny that I supported that view. I was simply not able to study every individual case…It was hard to draw a precise line where to stop.”

Damn it, Moorhouse is on my must-read-soon stack of books, which admonishes me very day that I am not keeping pace.

Has anyone read Roy Hattersley’s “Borrowed Time: The Story of Britain Between the Wars“?

Alright, have a minute.

I thought it was a good book that could’ve spent less chapters on overall indoctrination and more on what the Police Battalions actually did. Over all, good book that I recommend reading with Browning.

Now, I’m in a bit of a conundrum. I’m waiting on Hasting’s book on Vietnam. I’m not sure when it’s going to get released to me so I might reread something to pass the time.

Settled on Max Hasting’s “Inferno.” Taking a brief vacation, hoping to get the book on Vietnam soon.

Books I newly finished:

- Machete Season: The Killers in Rwanda Speak by Jean Hatzfeld

- We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will be Killed With Our Families: Stories from Rwanda by Philip Gourevitch

- Rethinking Srebrenica By Stephen Karganovic

- The Shallow Graves of Rwanda by Shaharyar M. Khan

- The Limits of humanitarian intervention: Genocide in Rwanda by Alan Kuperman

- Republican Party Animal by David Cole

- The Great Game of Genocide by Donald Bloxham

- The victims return by Stephen Cohen

- Stalins Agent by Boris Volodarsky

Probably more but this is what I remember
« The Terror here is a horrifying fact. There is a fear that reaches down and haunts all sections of the community. No household, however humble, apparently but what lives in constant fear of nocturnal raid by the secret police. . .This particular purge is undoubtedly political. . . It is deliberately projected by the party leaders, who themselves regretted the necessity for it. »

Telling you it’s not worth it, but go ahead if you’d like. If you ever start reading on Rwanda let me know.

For those of you interested in UK punk, the Punk Professor Matt Worley published a fine work in 2017 which examines UK punk, British Youth sub culture and how it fits and reflects back upon the Politics of the time. Visiting such stations as contested meanings, Art School punk, Situationism, Garry Bushell, Oi punk, Anarcho punk, women in Punk, the Gay punk scene and so on, I thoroughly recommend it as an antidote to nostalgia.

For those like MikeN and gorgeous (plus the departed Charles/Ian) who love them some Trump, “A Case for Trump” written by Victor Davis is now available. Apparently Newt Gingrich thinks it’s swell....

I'm planning a kind of longish trip to Europe in a few weeks. I won't be able to work during that time on the book project that's preoccupied me and is taking my time. I am will be bringing along a half dozen or so books on France during the war and 3-4 titles on Romania. I don't foresee any reading between now and then, as I have to finish up a phase of the project before I leave.

In June I am taking a trip into enemy-held territory in the US, driving for 3 weeks. My study of the Holocaust has been and will be seriously compromised by all this. At this point, I can't even recall who was chancellor of Germany during the war years.

vegetotherapy, orgone/Orgonon, delusions of grandeur, conspiracy theorizing . . .

Nazism as the outcome of sexual repression and the blocking of sex energy or some such (IIRC - I read the book in the '70s), a theory which in later life he seemed to apply to the situation he faced with the US feds . . . but, yeah, Reich was truly weird; he died in a federal penitentiary serving time for criminal contempt relating to his orgone boxes (not to applaud the feds' destruction of his books, etc, but Reich was friggin' odd)
