The Wolves

Post by Gord » Tue Jan 08, 2019 1:00 am

Where's fromthehills when I got something for him to read?

What ya got here is a petition to protect the wolves in Washington State: https://www.change.org/p/kelly-susewind ... e-s-wolves

Then they've got this as well:

https://www.change.org/p/kelly-susewind ... tm_term=cs
JAN 8, 2019 —

Trump’s sick plans to strip protection from nearly every gray wolf in the lower 48 is coming any day. But here at the Center for Biological Diversity we’re not waiting around for the blows to fall. We’re launching the fight of the century to save them. We know you care deeply about wolves, so we hope you’ll consider joining the Center’s Call of the Wild, our national, grassroots campaign to save America’s wolves by stopping the Trump administration from ending wolf protection coast to coast....
And it's all about this: https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/new ... 7-2018.php
...The Fish and Wildlife Service has signaled its intent to publish a proposed regulation to remove federal gray wolf protection, possibly as soon as the end of the calendar year.

Stripping away federal protection would allow states to open trophy hunting and trapping seasons on wolves. It would also halt wolf recovery in the Adirondacks, southern Rockies and other areas scientists have identified as suitable habitat. Wolves remain absent from approximately 90 percent of the places where they once lived.

“This petition and recovery strategy is based on the best available science and sound legal grounds, rather than politics and fear,” said Anna Frostic, managing wildlife attorney for the Humane Society of the United States. “To date the Service has repeatedly caved to state pressure to remove federal protections and repeatedly been overturned in federal court — thus, we are proposing a middle ground on this controversial issue.”

The Endangered Species Act requires the Service to respond to today’s petition within 90 days....

Shouldn't wolves continue to be very isolated? I know wolf on man attacks are rare, but that is helped by the fact that they are rare. As man continues to invade their limited remaining spaces....someone is going to get more than bit.

I think all "resources" should be managed for maximum utilization, for multiple uses whenever possible. Are deer still "actually" overruning certain suburban areas or has the law caught up to the issue and allow for seasonal culling of the herds by hunters filling in for the wolves who have been evicted.??? Its just TOO EASY for those of use in our easy chairs saying protect the wolves when we aren't the ones at risk for an attack.

I can see the apex predators becomin extinct and replaced by humans. The ecology is satisfied....just a few steps closer to extinction ourselves.

I blame Darwin.

Trump is deathly scared of sharks - some probably holds for any predatory animal.

I keep reading how millions, hundreds of millions, of sharks are fished from our seas every year. Only recently maybe being seen/treated as a good source of protein themselves and not just definned and thrown back to drown. You know: the ocean must be pretty big to have that many sharks? Where are they all? I only have seen 3-4 on my various dives.

They need to double up on their westernization and give up that laughably inane herbal medicine routine. its RIGHT THERE in the name: HERBals. Not rhino horns and shark fins and whatever other completely stupid ideas they cling to.

I blame Darwin........the Chinese.

Too bad that his trigger-happy offspring won't be getting in on that, having been trapped by their own father and (most likely) will become some of Team Mueller's trophies.

The excellent book, American Wolf, by Nate Blakeslee describes the various sides to the story of wolf reintroduction and protection.

I know that in Arizona and New Mexico, where the Mexican wolf release program is going, some of the locals have built enclosed shelters for their kids, so they won't get killed by wolves while waiting for the bus in the morning. The kids play outside in the evenings like normal. Idiots.

Do more diving !

I have seen 200 sharks on a single dive, many times.

Indeed - good to protect kids from rabid repubs when they wait for the bus.

I keep "not watching" that. Getting kinda tired of watching "Nature" programs. How relevant is Nature to the average anybody?? I do enjoy the photography, its fantastic. Wolves do tend to leave hoomans alone..........only 3-4 recorded attacks over time, thats a good thing and if they make National Parks "healthier"........then, why not?

But everytime I give up and watch those shows.......I still wind up liking them more than explosions, car chases, and Political BS.

...........hmmm.......all irrelevant, but able to rank order them.

This is it. Trump has declared a nationwide war on wolves. His administration has rolled out plans to strip Endangered Species Act protection from nearly every wolf in the lower 48....

...We know what will happen next: It will be a return to the days when wolves were shot on sight, killed in traps and relentlessly persecuted to the brink of extinction. Worse yet, it will end 40 years’ of wolf recovery in the United States.

The big lie pushed by the Trump administration is that wolves have recovered. But the truth is that wolves occupy less than 10 percent of their historic habitat and face persecution from coast to coast....
Thanks, Trump.

I was a tour guide and docent at the Endangered Wolf Center for years. If this goes through we'll lose the ones in the wild now. Hopefully Mexico will take the ones that have to be removed.

Sadly, that's the only place in the world where docents are employed.

Up at my in laws Moose have been reintroduced. No problems, but probably more dangerous than wolves. At this point, if it’s evil, I just assume Trump is going to do it.

They tried for years to reintroduce the gray fox to this area, but they all seem to end up dead on the roads. I killed a few myself by accident; they see your headlights, then turn to run away from you running directly in front, dodging back and forth between your headlights before you can stop. I suppose if they keep releasing them, eventually one of them will have a mutation that prevents this suicidal behavior, but who knows how many years and millions of dollars that will take?
