White supremacists and Japan: A love story
MAR 7, 2018

The Washington Post reported something interesting on Feb. 14: A farm in Virginia put up a sign saying “Resist white supremacy.” And it incurred a surprising amount of online backlash.

Calls for boycotts. Accusations and recriminations. One-star Facebook reviews that had nothing to do with their products.

The article pondered: Who, other than a white supremacist, would object to a message rejecting white supremacy?

But if you’ve ever protested racism in Japan, or read comments sections in Japanese media, you’ll know these reactions have been old hat for nearly two decades.

In fact, this column will argue that online intolerance and attack have been Japan exports.

Any comments?

Nope Japan doesn't have a problem with thinking that the Nipponese are better humans than all the others.
They think that they are the only humans and the gaijin are either monkeys or demonspawn or both.
Koreans and some Chinese think the same for their ethnicity, so it must be true.

I read that Debito article some time ago - and as far as Japan goes, he is usually spot on. Here the official line is that there are no ethnicities - only Japanese (that matter). Sure there are areas of Koreans, Chinese, Brazilians, etc. - but they are accepted as foreigners/visitors. Ethnicities within Japanese - Okinawans (Ryukyu Okoku - The Ryukyu Kingdom), Ainu (aboriginals in Hokkaido), war/pre-war Koreans who haven`t acclimated - don`t get acknowledged to exist from an official/policy standpoint. This leaves all sorts of opportunities for hatemonger nationalists who will pick up on the slightest difference.

Set aside their ethnicity, speak the Japanese language, follow the customs, adopt an approved Japanese name, and no problem – these people get fully accepted as Japanese from an official standpoint.
