As of this morning, he's still hanging tough, as government workers line up to apply for food stamps and other welfare. But it's early days yet. Wait until the holidays are over and Congress is back in session, and people start to pay attention (as much as they ever do) again.
I sense it not ending until the Democrats control the House and congress overrides his veto. He will own the shutdown; congress will own the startup. Awesome!

Let me make this even simpler, Gord.

Do you understand, for example, that there are no longer border guards and border stations between France and Germany, who fought many bloody wars with each other; that there are only signs saying, in their respective languages, Welcome to France, Welcome to Germany.

This is what some classical liberals and libertarians would like to have on the US borders with Canada and Mexico, no border stations at all.

Capisce?

This shouldn't be a real hard concept to grasp, even if you passionately hate the idea.

Are you just feigning stupidity?

A simple Yes or No will suffice.

Personally, I have no idea what that has to do with anything I've been saying.
So you are still feigning stupidity?

Or lack of basic reading comprehension?

Go back and reread what you have been saying.
What are you talking about? I know what I've been saying. It's what you're saying in response that I can't understand. What's the connection?

Nice thought. I think enough Republicans might be disgusted enough with him to provide the 2/3 required in both houses. Still, it's a bit of a stretch. To get that supermajority in the Senate, we'd have to get more than half of the Republicans to vote for it, and some of them will consider themselves beholden to him for his support in the recent election.

Whew! Thank goodness I added an "e" to my handle's surname. I don't suppose I have to tell you that my posting name is not my real name. Nice bit of googling, though. Who knew there actually was a person bearing the name I thought I had invented?

As for the hunting, no, I gave away my gun in 1966 and haven't hunted since that time.

On Trump in Iraq, my wife comments, "He's run out of generals to send in his place."

Who knows where they went. As he told those he called suckers (seriously), they flew in with a darkened and shuttered plane. And what an ordeal that was, how hard that was! (You could tell on the hot air-filled jacket he was wearing during his campaign speech.)

I'm inclined to believe as much about his outing as about the numerous times he Twiterred about his "lonely but productive" stay in the WH. That no one was allowed to witness and only heard about... /Alex Jones

Yeah, and it was so secretive that even the PM of Iraq wasn't allowed to know he was coming. They wanted Trump to drop in on the PM for a visit, but the Iraqi Prime Minister, not being aware of this, wasn't in town to receive his visitor.

What a {!#%@} of an operation. You'd almost think (gasp!) that it was a spur-of-the-moment decision or something on Trump's part. :heh: But that would be ridiculous!

It's supposed to, but then the lengthy planning tends to show itself in those visits. No lengthy planning is showing in this one. It has all the earmarks of an impromptu stunt: nobody knew he was going, nobody expected him to show up, nobody planned what he would do when he got there. They had to drag people into see him, sit them around a table, then watch him spout his talking points as if he had something to say.

it was so secretive that even the PM of Iraq wasn't allowed to know he was coming.

He has a way of treating other people's territory as if it was his own. I think that's why he hates the Europeans so much. They aren't the humble lackeys he requires. Brown people (in their PLACE, that is, outside the borders of the US) are his kind of people. When he needs somebody's back to step on so he can mount his great war horse, they are perfect for the purpose.

They claim such a visit takes much and lengthy planning - another nail in the "Iraqi surprise surprise"? :-P
Y'all think he made the few troops who had him sign the maga hats that were handed out to them pay for the merch?

On Trump in Iraq, my wife comments, "He's run out of generals to send in his place."
Why did he take Melancholia with him? Was she bad and needed to be punished?
Perhaps he wishes to swap her for someone with a Sunni-er disposition.

I feel certain he charged someone for them, that's for dang sure.

Its a good movie https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1527186/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Well, thanks for the recommendation. It is indeed a good movie. I just invested 2 1/2 hours watching it and didn't consider the time wasted. The science was a bit off (I mean the geology and meteorology of a near flyby with a massive celestial object), but after all, this is fiction. No tidal effects noticed on the first pass by? How come? Odd, though, the way Justine gets calmer and more sane as the apocalypse threatens and her well-grounded sister Claire goes to pieces, but not as badly as her rationalist husband John does. Very touching final scene, as Claire and Justine manage to comfort little Leo.

Back to the Trumpster, who is now threatening to "close" the border. (How does one do that? What do you do with people who insist on crossing it? And what about Americans who want to cross it going the other direction?)

And now the Iraqis are thoroughly pissed off at Trump's violation of their sovereignty. Action is threatened in the Iraqi parliament, and the Iranians are saying they have some troops who can drive out the Americans. That may well be true, as we are down to the merest skeleton crew. But they'd be well-advised not to try it. Trump would LOVE an excuse for an all-out aerial assault on Iran. And so would Netenyahu.

After a brilliant 2-day rally, the DJIA is down by a paltry fraction of a percent today. Hovering around 23,000

Damn! I was so hoping for a spectacular crash to finish out the year! Well, there's still Monday....

Economies run more smoothly when businessmen and investors aren't waiting for the next shoe to drop. When the shutdown ends, anything can happen.
