I met the French journalist "Pertinax" . . . and asked him how he liked America. "A desert," he said. "They are lost, not in space, but in time." He blew off his finger-tips into the outer darkness. "They detest us all, but you British more, because they feel themselves inferior. Ce n'est pas une civilization."

"LONELINESS: It is a continual, almost palpable quality which the country gives off like a heat shimmer. It is no less present in the utter separateness and indifference of the city life, the blank size of the buildings, the self-sufficiency of the different ethnic ghettoes, than in the deserts and mountains of the South-west."

Oil companies could drill in Harper's new beluga sanctuary

http://www.vancouversun.com/technology/ ... story.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
By Andrew Mayeda, Postmedia News August 27, 2010 2:02 PM

OTTAWA — The federal government has quietly left the door open to offshore oil drilling in a conservation area for beluga whales in Canada's Arctic waters that was unveiled with much fanfare by Prime Minister Stephen Harper this week.

. . . In most of the protected area, petroleum exploration and development will be prohibited. But to allow the holders of the significant-discovery licences to "continue to exercise their rights," the government plans to create a "special-management zone" where companies will be allowed to conduct exploratory drilling, pipeline construction and other activities.

New Democrat MP Nathan Cullen said allowing an exception for offshore drilling defeats the purpose of creating a protected area. "This is a protected area that protects nothing except oil and gas interests," said Cullen.
Hey numan, did you vote for Harper? Or should we blame all those "betters" you keep talking about?

"Like almost everyone outside the US and not a few in it, I had always been greatly alarmed by the Americans. For many years, they had been putting the wind up the world by actions of terrifying charity and menacing goodwill....

I recalled the genuinely tender consideration with which the army in Viet Nam provided artificial limbs for the children whose legs they had blown off. The Americans were the people with whose good intentions the road to hell was so painstakingly paved."

Speaking about a planned monument to American draft dodgers in Canada:

"... to honor draft-dodgers, deserters, people who brought grief to the families they left behind and anguish to those American men who took their place, is an abomination. You can say what you want about the war -- we all did and some still do -- but do not dishonor the warrior by memorializing cowards."
-- Colonel John Furgess, Vietnam veteran, Tennessee Army National Guard, retired.

The corporations do what they want even in Canada. They are soulless, money making machines without any morals and responsibilities towards us or the well being of our planet. Yet, we all partake in this by investing our money with them, buying their often blood tainted products and allowing them to rampage practically unimpeded all around us. I think we are all {!#%@}.

To xouper.;;I
remember when the American draft evaders came to Canada in the nineteen sixties. They were young, intelligent people with an incredible energy and keen, almost un American social and political consciousness. That's why they refused to take part in an evil war waged by the evil people. You xouper, can quote the stupidly patriotic colonels with one track minds all you want but that won't change the fact that because of that war America had lost the best in more ways than one and Canada had only gained.

I agree, those 18 year olds were the sons and daughters of a generation that sacrificed greatly for their opportunities to develop these traits. They represent but a miniscule percentage of the many other young and intelligent people who directed their incredible energy towards helping their countrymen the best they could.

But there is nothing more un-American than to flee and justify it by expressing those lame character assassinations about the men and women who took their place.
numan wrote:Flash, I commend you for your intelligence and good sense ... and you are correct, too!
Yes, I agree with your assessment of Flash ... and you might follow his example.
Obviously he's looking for something positive to contribute.

If you stopped generalizing and quoting dead people, and kept your keen social and political consciousness to contemporary observations about America, your posts would less resemble the never ending biased bashing at the holocaust forum.

Seriously numan, your learned tongue is highly readable, but if you'd like to stay relevant and sharp, try combining the acidity and likability of nmbium with the insight and linkability of pyrrho.

By now you have a seasoned audience, so give us some sugar and hold the spice.
After all, we're still here after surviving your poetry.

Some Americans were, yes, but not most of them.

And the same can be said of any country at war, including Canada.

Do you think Iraq were the good guys when they invaded Kuwait in 1990?

Except that those who were bright enough to get into college did not need to flee to Canada. So, not only did America not lose very many of their best and brightest, Canada also gained a whole lot of cowards and a bunch more who were clearly not smart enough to outwit the system. Are you seriously suggesting that Canada is better off having gained dipshit college rejects like numan?

Well, this college reject won a scholarship from a prestigeous Canadian association. I could easily have obtained a military deferment in the US, also. I refused to do that, in order to reject the corrupt authority of an evil American power structure.

And, for decades, I have been educating Canadians to recognize the truth about people like you, Xouper. So I have obviously been very useful to my new home---not to mention bringing much more than a million dollars of assets out of the USA, and investing them in Canada.

This fits: In a letter to Thomas Jefferson, written 37 years after the Declaration of Independence, John Adams wrote: "The general principles, on which the Fathers achieved independence, were the only Principles in which that beautiful Assembly of young gentlemen could Unite. ... And what were these general Principles? I answer, the general Principles of Christianity, in which all these Sects were United: ... Now I will avow, that I then believe, and now believe, that those general Principles of Christianity, are as eternal and immutable, as the Existence and Attributes of God; and that those Principles of Liberty, are as unalterable as human Nature and our terrestrial, mundane System."

John Jay, the first chief justice of the Supreme Court, wrote in a letter to a friend, "Providence has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers."

Xouper probably thinks so, since he supports American actions which are monstrous.
And since Canada also supported Americans in Vietnam, that makes you an accessory too. Furthermore, your Canadian tax dollars continue to support American war efforts. And most damning, Canadians are currently in combat operations in Afghanistan, so don't give me that BS that you are somehow morally superior to me. You are not.

In any case, I do not approve of or condone war atrocities. To accuse me otherwise is an egregious lie.

Your attempt to indict me as a distant accessory is also an indictment of yourself, numan, and for all the same reasons. You cannot escape blame by escaping to Canada, since Canada is and was an accessory to those same atrocities.

As usual, Xouper demonstrates his invincible ignorance. Canada took no part in the Vietnam War and stood against it as well as it practically could.

Canada also took no direct part in the Iraq War; howver, it did provide logistic support for the muderous activities there. It is also taking part in the evil occupation of Afghanistan. Therefore, I am an indirect accessory to American crimes---against my will. Why the hell do you think I am so angry?

Again, you are mistaken. Canada directly supported the American war effort in Vietnam. It's well documented. I already posted the evidence in another thread.
Canada also took no direct part in the Iraq War; howver, it did provide logistic support for the muderous activities there. It is also taking part in the evil occupation of Afghanistan. Therefore, I am an indirect accessory to American crimes---against my will. Why the hell do you think I am so angry?
It is not against your will. You are living in Canada willingly, no? You vote in Canadian elections and accept the outcomes as binding upon you, do you not?

However, if you wish to claim it is against your will, then by your own logic, I am no more an accessory than you are.

So again, your argument is refuted by your own words.

In any case, Canada was most definitely a part of the First Gulf War against Iraqi forces.

"A difficult task is to shift the moral onus of the Vietnamese war to its victims. This seems a rather unpromising enterprise---rather as if the Nazis had attempted to blame the Jews for the crematoria. But undaunted, American propagandists are pursuing this effort, too, and with some success. Things have reached the point where an American President (Carter) can appear on national television and state that we owe "no debt" to the Vietnamese, because "the destruction was mutual." And there is not a whisper of protest when this monstrous statement, worthy of Hitler or Stalin, is blandly produced in the midst of a discourse on human rights."

Thank you for providing proof that when Americans refuse to discuss a subject rationally, they always shriek how wrong, wrong, wrong! it is to compare the USA with Nazi Germany.

Who's shrieking?
I'm very fond of Hitler licking but I fail to recognize it as proof of a rational discussion.
Although I do recognize preachy sarcasm as a logical element of wit in furtherance of rationality, one would hope it to be more biting to appeal to the palate.

Maybe it's not for every one.

Thank you for providing proof that when Americans refuse to discuss a subject rationally, they always shriek how wrong, wrong, wrong! it is to compare the USA with Nazi Germany.

.
Umm, it is wrong. Not morally wrong, even from someone of such repugnance that would juxtapose the Holocaust to political discrepancies. It is factually wrong, however. Bush nor Obama are/were trying to round up a race of people for extermination, while maintaining a rallying cry of the American people. No one here is advocating, or trying, to conquer the world. We may have irresponsible leaders, but we don't have sociopathic leaders. We're not promoting a racist/white supremest agenda.

Please try to keep your captious comments about America based in facts and reality. You may fare better, and wouldn't be accused of lying, even if you're disputed.

I have to edit. I assumed Numan was on a Numan rant, and I didn't actually read the Chomsky quote he posted, until afterward.

You say that the USA cannot be compared to Nazi Germany, after Vietnam and Iraq? That just shows how ga-ga and cut off from reality Americans truly are.

Good job. That was one of your more intelligent responses. You are making progress. Maybe next month we'll teach you times tables.

Dude, the 1800's are as dead and irrelevant as the French visitors of it's era.

"Those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

And the price of the lesson is higher with each repetition.
