Watch Out for UFO! Oops, I mean Venus as Morning Star

Post by Centaur » Fri Nov 02, 2018 4:46 pm

Get ready for hysterical UFO sighting reports! Venus has commenced its apparition as the brilliant Morning Star in the eastern sky before sunrise following its inferior conjunction between Earth and Sun on 2018 OCT 26.

I’ve created a more detailed article about this apparition, and several graphics related to the motions of Venus, including one illustrating its position in the predawn evening eastern sky throughout the entire apparition. They can be seen by visiting https://www.CurtRenz.com/venus.html

Photos and descriptions of Venus during this apparition would be welcome additions to this thread.

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

I read that Uranus is currently visible in binoculars. Any details of exactly where to look ?

In fact at magnitude +5.7 Uranus currently can be seen by sharp naked eyes under clear dark skies. It's now in the constellation Pisces. This webpage of mine should be helpful: https://www.CurtRenz.com/uranep.html

I have a free application called 'StarTracker' on my smartphone. Point in any direction to see the position of planets and stars. Great for seeing thru the clouds, buildings, and even the earth if you point it that way. And of course great for confirming what you are seeing.

I have a similar system, TJ. Sadly, it does not really help, since the pointing system merely gives the general region of the sky, and something as small as Uranus needs more precision.

The direction from Pisces is not much better. I have not yet been able to find Pisces. It seems to be made up of very faint stars and the sky in that region is full of very faint stars.

Sigh. I will keep trying.

Look for Uranus... ;)

But I do agree - the application works best when you have a very clear sky and no light pollution - or rather my eyes work best. I use mine in the early morning when at the end of an unlighted pier – the mid-point of my morning walk. Or just before bedtime on my property… Plus, I never learned the names of constellations, and it helps there.

It amazes me that apparently no one noticed Uranus before the invention of the telescope. With the absence of street lighting and air pollution over most of the world during ancient times, some folks must have spotted it moving relative to the background stars over a period of time. They may have been poor shepherds who knew the constellations but had no ability to make credible reports to more learned people.

Ooh, I've never seen Uranus with the naked eye before!

I can find the Great Square (the wing of Pegasus) easily. From there, it should be simple to spot one end of Pisces, follow the stars down to where the two ends meet, then follow the other end back up.

I'll look for Uranus next time I'm outside at night. It's snowing a bit right now, though, so there'd be no point even looking at the moment.

What does it mean when someone says: "You couldn't find Uranus with both hands?"

Well, Uranus is quite large.

I could barely make out the Square tonight. There was no hope of seeing Pisces, never mind Uranus.

Use that smartphone app come telescope, and you can see it up close and even with a naked eye ifin you squint at your screen just right. You don`t even need to be lying on your back among a herd of sheep or howling at the moon in echo of the wolves… It does help if you have milked old Suzie first.

Well aren't you a party pooper!

[Also, that's not an apostrophe. Let's try putting another one at the end of the sentence and see what we get!]
