Cats

Postby Lance Kennedy » Sun Jul 01, 2018 9:16 pm

Here in New Zealand, we have 168 species of native birds, the leftovers of about 220 species from before humans arrived, and half the survivors are considered to be threatened.

The major cause of this is introduced predators. Rats, stoats, Australian opossum, dogs and cats. I have 4 acres of native rainforest which I am planting out with native forest giant trees. I am trapping and poisoning rats, stoats and opossums. I should see a resurgence of bird life. But I am not. The reason is cats.

I have neighbours who insist on keeping cats. We know definitely that cats, including domesticated cats, are shocking bird predators. Having cats next door, killing off the birds that should be recovering is frustrating to me.

What can we and should we be doing to limit this scourge.?

Trap and dispatch those cats. Or convince them to add bells to their collars.

And... of course, eat those `back fence rabbits`....

There are numerous cats wandering my neighborhood. There are plenty of small birds.

Perhaps cats aren't the only problem, Lance.

No they are not.

The problem is introduced predators. In some cases, that includes humans. But cats are certainly part of the problem and a very significant part.

That would be... Cool cats?.... 8-)

We have lots of cats too and not as many birds as I would like to see. But I think our problem is pesticides, reducing the food birds need, and snakes. Luckily we also have humongous predator birds which cull the cat population - the kittens anyway.

But dats deforestation, and we all know that birds don`t use the forests, but prefer rocks, open fields, and roadways...

Deforestation is not the bogeyman most people think it is. There is remarkably little evidence that it causes major extinctions. I quote Prof. Bjorn Lomborg on this in his "Skeptical Environmentalist ". He talks of Puerto Rico, where the entire forest cover has been removed several times over, and regrown, yet most endemic species of forest bird survived. Of course, it was never all gone all at once. There was always some forest to support those birds. But it indicates that less than total deforestation does not cause extinctions. According to the good Prof. Lomborg, the few species in Puerto Rico that actually went extinct were killed off by rats.

In my country, deforestation has removed two thirds of the forest cover. Not all, and there has always been at least this much forest. So deforestation is not a cause of extinctions. There are two extinction causes. Over hunting and introduction of alien predators. That is quite sufficient.

To Az.

Thank you for your kind words. As Abe Lincoln said, you cannot fool all the people all the time. But the corollary is that I can fool Az some of the time.

I've shared your concerns about the loss of birds species including the Carolina Parakeet, gorillas and other great apes, and so on, more in the past than I do now, because I somehow I find the book The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert, 2014, consoling!
https://www.amazon.com/Sixth-Extinction ... th+kolbert

She discusses five mass extinctions in world history that wiped out up to 90% or so of the plant and animal species alive at the time, and talks about this current sixth extinction caused by humans that you are witnessing.

I've probably taken the wrong message from this book, which to me is something like "Ho hum, the world has abided other mass extinctions, so why not another one?"

But, in any case my suggestion is for you to take a deep breath and a "What, Me Worry?" attitude toward your neighbor's cats.

It would probably benefit your health and happiness to have good relations with your neighbors, which is more important than what little impact those cats will have in the long run.

I think, Tom, that your view is not a good one. Any extinction is a loss. Here in NZ, we have already lost 50 species of native birds, including the world's tallest, and the world's largest eagle. Gone and extinct, never to return.

Humans don't seem to be able to take responsibility for raising their own children, having them become concerned about something that doesn't directly impact them seems unlikely.
