1964 Solway Firth Spaceman Photo Debunked

Postby Bart Stewart » Sun Jan 19, 2014 2:24 am

I don't know if everyone has seen this so I thought I would post it. It's not often that a classic "mystery photo" goes takes so long to be revealed.

If you don't know it by name you have surely seen the famous photo of the Solway Firth Spaceman of 1964. A little kid smiles at the camera while a strange figure is standing some distance behind her wearing what looks like a space suit. The father who took the picture said he was alone with his daughter and wife at the time.

These things are always either fakes or mistakes. In this case it was the latter.

I've heard about this, and am fairly convinced to lean towards "mistake", though perhaps on balance it was faked.

Intuition says "mistake"... :P

Very obviously there was no extra-terrestrial involvement, but I suspect that they (Both father and girl) have allowed the myth to cloud their better judgement here.

It's a shame that such a sweet picture got ruined by bullcrap

Fun, I suppose, but nonsense... ;)

The thing I find most interesting is that anyone would assume that such a thing is a real spaceman or UFO or ghost just based on NOTHING, rather than assuming that something went wrong, was faked, or made up.....

Each image, as the last one, needs to have its own url address. If it's embedded in another website, and has an embed code address, then a direct link will usually be forbidden.

If you can right click (with the mouse) on the picture and the option "view image" (I'm specifically referring to Firefox, although IExplorer has the same function) is available, then you're good. If the option is unavailable, then the linking errors start cropping up ;)

Or a functioning index finger on the right hand ;)

If required, I'll do a photo array demonstration. My laziness compels me to add "I hope it's not required..."

They have to be horrendously ugly at first, otherwise what have they got to aim for?

"Oh I remember you when you were a baby!"
"You do?"
"Yeah. You were ugly then, too..."

Probably a shepherd mix, note the lighter underbelly.

The idea may have been planted in the photographer's head by the chemist who developed the photo, according to one source I read. This chemist specifically said something about it being a nice photo except for the man in the space suit standing there. This cemented the notion that it was an entity in a space suit, not the girl's mother in soft focus, facing away from the camera.

Still, as the years went by, this couple had to figure out what it really was. So, some fakery became involved at that point. I don't know if they exploited it financially, but it was a hugely famous photograph.

This iz the 1st time I'v seen that.

Hard to juj by 72 dpi internet copyz uv 50 yir old fotoz, but I think you are all being a little hasty in accepting this az 'debunked'.

In the other foto, you can see the wife in her blue sleeveless dress. Az low rez az it all iz, you can eazily see the difference in thickness & color uv the arm between the 2 piks. Plus there iz no shadow line on either shoulder uv the 'spaceman'. Then therez the hair. Wut little we see uv mommyz seemz to be similar to the daughter - blondish/gingerish and not unusually shiney. The 'spaceman' face looks exactly like a dark shaded brazing mask, like wut youd expect on a fire suit uv sum kind.

All the dismisal uv Mr. Templetonz later statements are pure speculation.

JO, have you really looked at the bend of arm? It's been quite obvious. And considered perspective distortion?

Always reminds me of this guy in the background on a hill.

Image

As for the OP's picture I never thought it was real, and def not a space man. If anything it looks like a guy cleaning up toxic waste.
