Nasty virus

Postby JO 753 » Thu Aug 29, 2013 3:41 am

Got hit with a computer virus today or yesterday. Took a few owrz to get my computer running agen.

There wuz an email suppozedly frum the FBI with sumthing about child porn. I dont recall if I hit the 'report spam' button for it, but I certainly didnt click on anything in the email. apparently I didnt need to kuz earlier today my machine locked up and the whole screen had an 'FBI' paje telling me my computer wuz locked till I paid a fine. It included sum info frum my computer and boxez to fill in befor hitting the payment button. It also tryd to take my picture with the webcam bilt into this netbook, but sumthing didnt work with that.

Restart and such didnt work so I decided to put in the restore disk, but they put sumthing deep in to stop that. Even trying an old XP disk didnt work. Sumwhere along the line sumthig in Windowz finally worked and started a thing to find & fix errorz in the hard drive and after that I wuz able to do a restore.

I gess its time to put in better security software.

Yes, thanks, JO.

I sometimes hover my mouse over suspicious email addresses to read them without intending to click on them. Stupid thing occasionally does it anyway. :shakefist:

Now I know where not to hover!

Damn...

JO, have you tried Avast! antivirus? It's free, and IMO one of the better AV programs out there for active monitoring.

I've dealt with that one. There are various iterations.

You need to boot in safe mode as the admin, and run a removal tool. It helps if you have another computer with internet.

Malware Bytes is another good free one for most everything that ails ye.

Once that's sorted, you need to harden your security.

For free virus and firewall, I recommend Comodo Internet Security. It's currently the best one out there. But just be aware it comes with a lot of bloatware, so make sure to deselect everything except the firewall and virus scanner during install.

That one hit me last month. Told me I had to pay a "fine" of $100 in order to "unlock" my computer. I hit restart and everything came back for me, thanks to Comodo, which had isolated the virus (it let it run once, but didn't let it copy itself anywhere else onto my system).

I've also made a reboot memory stick now, specifically designed to deal with this virus.

Comodo acts like a goram virus! Coudnt get rid uv it after it failed to install properly. Kept popping up with crap about risk and reboot and the Windowz 7 Starter pile uv gosa wuz helpless agenst it. Uninstall woudnt happen until I let it finish installing and then It still failed to clean it all out.

Then the screen went wite like it did from the FBI skam so I yanked the internet & power cordz. Avant! Outa here! Did a restore to the farthest back point it had. Still left the shortcut for Comodo on the desktop!

I had a revelation wile goofing around with this mess.

UFOz are not Alien space craft. They are frum rite here, probably 10, 20 yirz in the future.

PC hardware will be predictably a few million timez more powerful than now, but we will still mostly be cursing Windowz, farting around with Linux and blindly worshipping Apple. It will all still SUK, just faster and bigger.

Then me or sumwun like me will in a fit uv raje plug an ancient Amiga OS into hiz new computer yelling EAT THIS YOU PIECE UV KRAP! and it will work.

The OS that wuz able to do movie grade special effects with 2 Mhz prosessorz and 500Kb hard drivez will run wild with all the power and space. It will bekum sentient in an instant and take over the world (wich will be just about totally hooked up to the web by then) relegating us to the dust bin uv history, replasing us with an idealized perfect DNA Amiga version. It will create all sorts uv tek we woud never hav been able to figure out including time travel, wich iz the UFOz we are seeing.

And sinse I'll be a grumpy old man by then, I'll say 'its turning us all into cat food and we luv it!'

OK, thats my sifi/computerz suk rant for this month.

PS. Forked over the 40 buks for McAfee.

I got hit by that virus, and it locked my screen. I switched the machine off and back on again. It's gone.

A question I'v had for a long time - Why dont big companyz come out with new operating systemz all the time?

I woud think the 'prevailance uv Windowz' argument woud hav gon stale 12 yirz ago and Toshiba, Sony, Texas Instruments, HP, Samsung, etc. woud be competing for a huje market hungry for an alternativ that duznt require geek level skillz to uze.

Android seemz to be starting off badly. Cant even render fonts properly.

Because someone would have to re-write the word processor, spreadsheet, database, etc. etc. for each new OS and then sell them to angry customers. Having said that, Microsoft do it quite often - backwards compatibility has never been a watchword of theirs.

I'd expect them to include all the common functionz customerz like az part uv the software. Who sez they must be seperate thingz?

By now, I'd also expect there to be an OS smart enuf to read any software. Even with simple brute fors, its not such an impossible feat to just keep rejuggling all the 1z & 0z till it makes sense.

What you're calling bad ideas are good ideas necessitated to give us what we want from our computers. At present the capacity to enact what you think of as good ideas just doesn't exist. Will it? Probably. Does it? No.

In other words, there is a huge trade-off to move away from the basics into the kind of specialized OS programming that gives us Windows, but they're trade-offs people want.

I gess not then. Let me try to explain.

I hav wut you mite call a nak for dezining mekanikl devisez. If sumwun haz an idea for a product, I am able to think up a haf dozen different wayz to make it happen in an hour, a day or a week, depending on the complexity and restrictionz.

Eventually I haf to pick 1 and start thinking up detailz befor making a prototype. Its not a sharply defined point, bekuz I actually start thinking up detailz frum the beginning which helps eliminate ideaz that wont work or will lead to excessive complexity, cost andor bad ergonomics.

If I pick the rong idea at the beginning, thingz tend to get complicated, delicate, sloppy, and generally unreliable. I will figure out wayz to make it work anyway, but it will never be very good.

This haz happened several timez. Liv and lrn.

There are sum characteristics common to thingz that got off on the rong track early on. Az above, complicated, sloppy, unreliable. Also, excesssive bulk, requiring extreem precision, preventing or complicating additional featurez, requiring uzer training, requiring secondary or further operationz to accomplish the main function, requiring special toolz.

Not all uv that applyz to software, but Windowz gets a check in nearly every box in the Junk Based On a Bad Idea list and the current alternativez are not a whole lot better.

Kind of like the brains we have to work with. Just layering more complexity on top of what seems to work and everyone just got used to.

Oh geez, how awful. Glad you posted about this to help warn others. This is exactly why I don't even check my spam -_- I just delete it all. I don't trust anything, even hovering over them. I have the avast and it's been working pretty good for me. I have a mac and so far so good. I have the windows partition on it through bootcamp and on the windows, it really doesn't work as well. I don't know, maybe it works different for everyone. Anyways... thanks for this. Proved my theory of never opening anything or looking at spam and just deleting it all. lol
