It's Tuesday… I'm in love…..

Postby nmblum88 » Tue Jun 21, 2016 4:59 pm

…… after being up all night (figuratively, of course) with Siddhartha Mukherjee, immersed in his stunning, expansive, illuminating, fabulously researched and beautifully written, "THE GENE: An Intimate History."
Such a book, what a work!!
The history of the concept of heredity, which as it happens goes back a long, long way, and the ensuing centuries long investigative work that has occupied all manner of scientists: every paragraph immensely readable. not a word to be missed.
How to encourage every one of you to rush out to acquire these enchanting (and educational) 500 pages plus an indispensable appendix and a wring index?

Would it entice you if I mention that it may be the only serious work of science that will begin with Philip Larkin's 20th Century version of the story of Adam and Eve?

"They {!#%@} you up, your mum and dad,
THey do not mean to, but they do.
The fill you with the faults they had.
And add some extra, just for you."
(Phillip Larkin: "This Be the Verse")

See? Dr. Mukherjee not only has a sense of humor, he also knows his poetry as well as his biology… he being, after all,
a researcher AND a practicing oncologist….
A true Renaissance man, is Dr. Mukherjee.
Anyone who has read his also extraordinary "The Emperor of All Maladies…" a similarly comprehensive history of cancer
knows what I mean..

He was on C-Span this weekend being engaged by Judy Woodruf (sp?) who had actually read a lot of his stuff. He told a nice story of visiting Mendele's original monastery where he did his work. He wanted to study mice...but the Church thought that was too close to hoomans....so he was stuck with peas. Turns out...genes or "information" being passed one generation to the next was first proposed by Socrates. Man..........those old Greeks. Amazing what you can "think" if you simply observe? Talked about eu-genics and dis-genics.

What is it with India producing all these scientists?

Are you absolutely certain it was Socrates?

Now that you emphasize it....probably was Aristotle. I'm not remembering his talk but rather my own education. He did emphasize that (Aristotle) was mostly a botanist with only a sideline into philosophy. He got pushed into talking about the next book he ought to write...forget exactly what it was about now. Maybe designing/improving the human genome....naw...too close to the book on discussion.

My daddy gave me many things,
among them, his poor health
But what that bastard didn't leave me
was manners, sense, or wealth
My momma gave me just one thing
and quite a lot of it
No, it wasn't looks or smarts
she only gave me {!#%@}
This is a sentence. tHi5 iz a seN+3nce oN drUgs!!!

It's a long time since I've seen you wax so lyrical, Norma.

So I'll give it a serious go.
