Welcome!

Postby DoctorAtlantis » Thu Oct 22, 2009 12:32 am

Hello and welcome to the Monster Talk Forum.

First off, I know there are a lot of folks out there who are VERY passionate about their opinions on monsters, cryptids, aliens, etc... We want everyone to be welcome here. Civility is the key to that. I'm as guilty as anyone about getting snarky, but good discussions should not include hateful rhetoric or incites to violence or threats...

Let's keep it civil.

That being said, have fun in the forums!

(Unless you're a stinkin' spammer in which case I'll ban you. Nuff said?)

Hi Blake, Ben and Karen.

This is a terrific start. I was curious about Dr. Todd as a regular on MonsterQuest. This was a very interesting conversation to begin your new audio venture.

We've been without a skeptical venture focused just on cryptids. I'll be a regular listener. And the forums are great since I now have someplace to go to get and discuss the latest news.

Good Job folks.

Congratulations on a great start.
That was a much more in depth and scientific conversation than I expected.
Cryptozoology is generally speaking among the low-hanging fruit of the skeptical world, and it's easy to be (as I so often am) the {!#%@} Skeptic and simply be dismissive. I'll argue that that has it's place, but there is a much bigger discussion to be had - nice to see it in podcast form.

Thanks! We're new to this as producers of content, but hopefully we'll be able to bring the flashlight of science to the dark and mysterious corners of cryptozoology. And if we can help promote skepticism and science enthusiasm - then that's even better.

I hope it's not a case of "nuh-uh" each episode. Hopefully we'll be able to dig up new facts and info and learn something new.

I'm guessing you've thought about this, but perhaps there's some value (as much as it's the kind of argument that emboldens the likes of the BFRO) in doing some shows on those rare occassions where a cryptozoologic species has made the leap into zoologic species by being discovered. I'm sure I don't have to itemize some for you.

I'm thinking that a conversation like that can help highlight the difference in the realities of the science and pseudo-science that mark the varieties of cryptozoology.

Ben wants to do an episode on Ceolocanths. I'm looking to track down an appropriate guest.

Not to harp on MonsterQuest but they did jump on the "giant this" and "enormous that" bandwagon pretty quickly to flesh out their episodes. That and every frigging variant on bigfoot gets its own episode? <yawn>

It's weird, this new forum. It is like finding a new room in your house with a complete bunch of strangers living in there who know everything about you. I think Pyrrho is simply playing with our minds in one of those strange Skeptic Society experiments performed on members, that Pyrrho never discusses openly. The rumour is that Michael Shermer has ex forum members brains in very small glass jars above his desk....just a rumour...just a rumour....

Great podcast. Currently in catch-up mode, but enjoying everything I've heard so far even though I'm not a monster affectionado. I like the science and banter (although the guys usually dominate the conversation), and I usually learn new stuff in every episode.

I assume that will diminish in frequency as I become knowledgeable in nearly everything. But meanwhile, it's a great ride.

One comment about part of the intro . . . "24 mile long bottomless lake" . . . I've always wondered about that often used phrase.

Wouldn't it just be a bottomless hole?

Hello new people!

This isn't the newbie thread for the entire forum, it's the newbie thread for the Monster Talk section of the entire forum. A much larger and grander newbie thread is to be found in the Nexus section of the forum: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=5&start=1040

I don't even remember the actual meaning of "irony" anymore, it's been so badly abused by people.

And no, that's not ironic.

It's ironic that you think it's not ironic, as you so ironically pointed out.

Hi Blake, Karen and Ben-

I discovered your podcast recently and have been skipping around the episodes, and felt compelled to write to thank you all for such a great podcast. I also enjoyed the ArchaeFantasies (sp?) crossover which introduced me to yet another great podcast. Your show made me subscribe to Skeptic mag, and I play it in the car for my kids when we're being quiet. Don't worry, they've heard it all, and critical thinking skills are far more important than stray *#!$. All of you do such a great job delving deep into the subject matter while remembering to define terms for the listeners.

I have a recommendation for you after hearing about Karen's fiction. I'm sure you've all heard about Jonathan Creek, but there's a fantastic Japanese counterpart - a sitcom called "Trick", which involves a skeptical professor and an unemployed magician's assistant traveling around the country debunking paranormal phenomenon. You can probably guess who solves most of the cases.

Anywho, keep up the great work, and never stop punning!
