That would be extrasolar.

98,425 mph (if my conversion is accurate). That's only slightly greater than the orbital velocity of Mercury.
My nose tells me that may mean something, but I'm not sure what.

A "Run for them thar hills" scenario? Great - I haven't had one of those before.

An interesting concept is that of the rogue planet. A planet that wanders between the stars, instead of orbiting one. There is some evidence that they exist in enormous numbers, though our technology is still too poor to detect most of them. In particular, we have no idea how many small, perhaps Earth size rogue planets exist.

If billions of rogue planets exist, how many rogue asteroids ? Mega trillions ?

No, it would be extrasolar until it got into the solar system. Then it would be extraterrestrial until it hit Earth. Then, if it hit Gorgeous, it would be extraspecial.

It means it isn't going to be gravitationally bound to the Sun unless it's just outside the orbit of Mercury.

The closer you are to the Sun, the faster your orbital velocity is going to need to be in order to avoid falling into the Sun. On the other hand, if your velocity is too high, you'll fly away from the Sun rather than orbiting it. If the mystery asteroid is already far out there, then its velocity will prevent it from entering into a stable orbit.

I've been advised that capture is extremely unlikely. The parabolic path into the solar system will take it right back out again.

Unless it hits Gorgeous.

I assume it suggests that that asteroid has been travelling between solar systems for a very very long time. I wonder if there was anything we could learn from it, if we could visit it and dig around?

I also sort of wonder openly : Can't we roughly work out where it has been by measuring trajectories?

We don't know if it was every associated with another solar system. There might be more planets just floating around out there than are in orbit around stars. Still be fun to muck about in it.

Small correction: The trajectory is hyperbolic.
For those who don't know, eccentricity is basically a measure of how circular an orbit is. A perfect circle has an eccentricity of 0, an ellipse's is between 0 and 1, a parabola's is equal to 1, and a hyperbola is greater than 1. For comparison, the earth's orbit has e = 0.0167 and the planet with the largest eccentricity of orbit is Mercury with e = 0.2056. The very elliptical orbit of Halley's comet (e = 0.9671) is shown below.
Image

This new object, A/2017 U1 has an eccentricity of 1.1958.
Note that circular and elliptical paths are orbits because the objects continue to trace the same paths over and over but parabolic and hyperbolic paths are trajectories because the object continues along the path defined by the conic section but never goes through the same point twice.

I thought a parabola was one line and a hyperbola was two lines?

Like in this drawing: https://mathwithbaddrawings.files.wordp ... _00006.jpg

Or wait, never mind that, how about this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_eccentricity

A value of 0 is a circular orbit, values between 0 and 1 form an elliptical orbit, 1 is a parabolic escape orbit, and greater than 1 is a hyperbola.

And it comes with its own picture: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... orbits.svg (red = ellipctical, green = parabolic, blue = hyperbolic)

Actually, gorgeous is right, this is an emissary from the Galactic Federation. When it arrives they will assume control.

The first picture shows why these shapes are called conic sections (if you cut two cones placed as shown with a plane, you get one of those shapes. If the plane is exactly horizontal you get a circle). A hyperbola does have two curves, but an object on a hyperbolic path obviously can only travel one of them because the two paths never intersect. That's why your third picture only has one blue line instead of two.

I'm looking forward for three helpings of pills each day!
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
Spoiler:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.
