The patent kills people.

Postby Lance Kennedy » Thu Apr 06, 2017 5:11 am

Reference : New Scientist, 1 April 2017, page 6

Drug company, Gilead based in California, holds a patent on a drug for hepatitis C. They have set a price for this drug of more than $ 55,000 for a course of treatment, able to cure the illness. However, India and Egypt do not recognise that patent, and make a generic version, which sells for about $200 for a course.

80 million people world wide have hepatitis C, but only 5 million have access to the cure, due to the high cost.

While hepatitis c is not normally directly fatal, when untreated, it causes major liver damage, and that leads to 350,000 people every year dying from related problems.

Medicins sans Frontieres is challenging the patent on the grounds that it lacks 'an inventive step'. If they succeed, and make the generic version available widely, it will save multiple human lives.

Medical patents sometimes cause far more harm.

It looks like the patents will fail.... but if not in the US, a vacation in China would be a low cost alternative.

Key patents on sofosbuvir have already been revoked in China and Ukraine, and decisions are pending in Argentina, India, Brazil, Russia, and Thailand...

The standard response is that if you take away the patent protection THEN Big Pharma has no incentive at all to create new drugs. In the best "real" case scenario, this "should" lead to gubment support of major new drug creation, lawsuit prohibitions..... etc .

iow: lots of arguing and conflict. Just like now. We should reach maximum population load asap so we can die more slowly from the diseases that cannot be cured.

Asking: What is the most good for the most people?
Sample Issue: Should the Feds provide all babies with free diapers?
