Corporate food.

Post by Lance Kennedy » Tue Feb 13, 2018 8:50 pm

Reference : New Scientist, 3 February 2018, page 33

The above reference is an article based on the work of Dr. Marion Nestle at New York University.

She has taken on some of the big food corporations over misleading data and biased food 'research ' giving their products too much credit for good health and too little blame for harmful health outcomes.

I doubt that too many people here would be surprised to be told that industry funding skews research results. Interesting to see it quantified, though.

For example, on the question of whether sweet carbonated drinks (soda) contributes to obesity.
Among industry funded studies, 16% say that it does, and 84% says that soda does not contribute to obesity.
Among non industry funded studies, by contrast, 83% say that soda contributes to obesity.
It would appear to demonstrate (probably beyond reasonable doubt) that the source of the research funding can warp the results out of all recognition.

There was an organisation called Global Energy Balance Network, very influential, and which promulgated the false message that exercise rather than diet was the key to weight loss. Surprise, surprise. It was secretly funded by Coca-Cola.

The system works by corrupt researchers accepting money from food corporates, and publishing misleading research results. What is needed is institutions and researchers with higher ethical standards, who refuse dirty money.

In the real world.....what is needed is biased funding from many viewpoints so the truth can be devined.

Our food industry is more about scientific and consumer fraud than anything else other than politics, big Fossil, Big Pharma, Banks, Credit ....ok....the list goes on.

The Food Industries main success: shelf life. Lots of drawbacks, but a completely admirable benefit........if we don't want to engineer QUALITY of life issues into our Corptopcracy. Pros and cons to all our choices......who's list should win?

My cooking, even after having been dropped on the floor, is still better than any given city's best restaurant's best chef.
And this being the internet, you're just going to have to take my word for it.

Mail me the next food you drop on the floor and I'll test it out.

Great. Just dump them in your mailbox and I'm sure they'll make their way here.

I make no claim about the taste of my food after a day or two in the mail.

This reminds me of the misuse of:
• organic (because all food is organic)
• natural (not necessarily a plus...poison ivy is natural)
• fat-free (with a F.T. of added sugar to replace the fat's flavor)
• low calorie (when coupled with a disingenuous serving size)
• serving size (2⅓ servings? What BS! WTF is a third of a serving?)

One of my faves is a newly designed bottle of sauce I used to buy claiming "less sodium". Since I still had the original one, I checked - same amount. That made me search for the catch, which were the teeny-weeny words somewhere else on the label: *Than similar sauces.

How is that not false advertising?! I love it when they label it "less sodium" and I discover they've merely reduced the size of the packaging.

Or when something is labeled "new and improved." Really? Which one, because it can't be both.
