Go, coffee !

Postby Lance Kennedy » Sun Nov 26, 2017 7:03 pm

From an article in ScienceDaily.

Drinking 3 to 4 standard cups of coffee each day is associated with a lower risk of some cancers, all heart disease, liver disease, diabetes and dementia. Basically, the good old cuppa is healthy and contributes to longer life.

So logically, I should live forever, given my coffee addiction.
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
Spoiler:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

I've acclimated. Actually started to add instant coffee to my double expresso. I used to drink the stuff until I got stomach cramps.

Only thing I have found that works, is to switch to tea, fruit juice, plain water and let my system reset. Takes a few months.

As a result...I read coffee articles as they come along. Like eggs....it tends to switch back and forth.....with a settling down for "its good for you."

I count it as a blessing.

The migraines I would get from three cups of coffee per day would kill me.

I used to drink one cup a day, but it was a litre sized cup and the recipe was 50% instant coffee plus 30% water plus 20% sugar plus 10% cream. That may be the reason why my chest hairs are over a foot long.

Those are not chest hairs. They are fungus threads growing vigorously with all that sugar and cream to feed on.

Well, I was referring to what I used to do thirty years ago. Shouldn't the fungus threads have been replaced by lichen or something by now?

I've had maybe 5 or 6 sips of coffee in my life. Despised every one of them.

Exactly so. My Dear Old Dad used to make fun of me putting milk and sugar into my coffee. He said "Coffee is Black. If you add anything to it, you don't really like and you aren't really drinking....coffee." I said: "Works for me." Thats how most of our conversations went...............over a good cup of.........what would you call it? Americano?

Like Pyrrho and Io, I have never been a fan of strong coffee. What I do is dilute it. In fact, my coffee is about a fifth the strength of standard coffee. I can fully understand Io hating coffee, because strong coffee is bitter and nasty if you are not used to it. I suggest weaning yourself on to it, by starting with very weak milk coffee. Much nicer for a non coffee drinker.

I can't help feeling that if you have to put concerted effort into liking something then you don't really like that thing.
There's no benefit to forcing yourself to like drinking coffee, except, apparently, maybe, living longer. Longer drinking coffee.
If I spend the time I gain by drinking coffee drinking coffee, I'll pass.

What I'm drinking right at this exact moment is a recipe of my own I like to call "not a milkshake". It's composed of ~50% cold coffee that was made on Monday evening, ~40% milk, ~10% cream, and two teaspoons of sugar.

I switched to this a couple of weeks ago when I realised I'd been making a milkshake every day for about two weeks, and I thought to myself, "gee, can that be healthy? I don't think that can be healthy."

While I both need and enjoy coffee, I find basically all coffee-derived foods atrocious.

Pyrrho, I believe the migraines come from trying to kick the habit. I have gone to the doctor on more than one occasion complaining of migraines only to be informed that it was because I had tried to restrict or lower my caffeine intake. The migraines lessen over a couple of days.

But really, we keep hearing conflicting opinions as to whether a certain level of caffeine intake is good for our health or not. Perhaps it is one of those areas of science that has yet to resolve the problem. Different research comes up with conflicting results.

Anyway, I need my daily caffeine intake, just as I need my daily alcohol intake, so as a good skeptic, I will continue my habits until it is shown beyond reasonable doubt that either addiction is bad for me. I hope they never come to that level of proof, because life would be bloody boring.

I'm with you, Phoenix. Just living is bad for you - it's universally fatal. I don't actually care if coffee and alcohol is bad for me. So, in the long run, is breathing.

Kahlua is a beneficial contaminant.

In my case, I was developing a tolerance, and the migraines did not respond to increased caffeine intake. I was drinking a lot of coffee. Had to quit "cold turkey," and that was as much fun as you might imagine. To each his own...my caffeine receptors must be impaired or something.

Last Saturday I had a really bad headache and at first I thought it was because I didn't drink any coffee that day but we were out at home so I just had a glass of water and felt better almost right away. I realized that I was just dehydrated and while the headache was because of not having coffee, it wasn't because of caffeine withdrawal but just not having consumed any other liquid all day either. For reference, most days I drink 64 oz coffee, 12 oz beer, and that's all.

I had to look that up. 64 oz is about a liter. 12 oz about one glass full.

Oh how I wish we used metric. And I messed up my units anyway because I forgot a coffee "cup" is actually a "tasse" which is 4 oz instead of 8. I should have said I drink 32 oz (just over a liter) of coffee and 12 oz (350 mL) of beer.

Well Austin, as an Aussie I gotta say that the coffee amount is fair enough, but, mate, not even a stubbie of beer. Mate I drink probably as much coffee, if not more, but when it comes to beer, well I drink 6 stubbies a day. That is 2250ml, or as we call it over here, 3 tallies a day. And often I do better than that.

Having said that, no I'm not an alcoholic, in fact i can go a couple of weeks without a drink, even more. But I simply like my beer. Especially as I brew it myself :D.

I used to drink more beer but I'm trying to cut down. It's a lot of empty calories. Well done on the brewing; I have a Belgian sour fermenting in my basement right now.
